Re: "I want my SUV" for $800, Alex. - 06/11/04 07:37 PM

Well My guess is they are talking about and episode of Jeopardy. Possibly one of the categories was "I want my SUV" and the answer was XTERRA an the contestant guess wrong and answered with Hyundai. Although that’s just a guess as I don’t watch jeopardy

Ken Jennings wins about $2.5 million and then goes down. He's at 2.1-2.2 now(I think), so it won't be long.

dave and xtoy - not a bad deal

Here's the Lucky bastard

I was just doing some reading and found that they recently changed the rules on the show. Before the rule was you could only continue for 5 days. But they changed it to you could play as long as you keep winning! Not sure when they changed it but you know they knew this would eventually happen and when it did would get a lot of good press for their show.

Re: "I want my SUV" for $800, Alex. - 07/11/04 07:36 AM

ya, it crosses the line between game show and reality tv.. people tune in (read ratings go up) to see him lose... the longer he wins, the longer ratings stay high..

Jeopardy! has been standard evening viewing in my house for years. Even my little girls try to answer. It allways is the ongoing battle between myself and the Li'l Mrs. to see who answers first. She thinks she's so smart. laugh

Anyways. They changed the rule at the beginning of last season from the 5 day max to play until you are beat. It's amazing that this guy came out of the woodwork to kick everyone's ass. What's really amazing is not only the sheer girth of information that he posesses but his recall abilities to dig all of that information out of the recesses of his brain at a moments notice is staggering.

He is very calculating in his betting and he usually locks up the game before final jeopardy.

The waiting list for those game shows is years long.

Can you imagine finally getting your callback only to go up against that guy?

In order to be the best, you have to beat the best.

Imagine the feeling of being the one who actually takes him down!

They film a full week (5 shows) in one day.

Ken writes his name different every single show - it is his superstition.

Re: "I want my SUV" for $800, Alex. - 30/11/04 07:34 PM

I know this probably should've been moved to the Club House, but since the thread is still here, I may as well mention that the episode in which Ken finally lost aired tonight.

He missed both Daily Double questions in the Double Jeopardy round, so he was leading going into Final Jeopardy by only 14,400 to 10,000. The Final Jeopardy answer was, "Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year."

His opponent answered quickly while Ken looked like he was thinking hard and wrote down his answer right at the end. The opponent correctly answered with "H&R Block," while Ken came up with "Fed Express." Game over.

I think he was either paid off, or he just downright quit.

I do not think that lady genuinely beat him. shocked

I agree. I think it was fixed. Here was the Final Jeopordy question he lost on: "Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year."

The lady that beat him answered correctly, the tax accounting firm H&R Block. Ken answered incorrectly, answering Federal Express. If he won 74 games in a row, how could he lose on this question? Who would think that Federal Express only works four months a year?? I think it was fixed.

. . .

Who would think that Federal Express only works four months a year?? I think it was fixed.
Maybe he got stuck on the word "seasonal," and was thinking holiday season, not tax season.

It was a choke. I don't think there was a fix. I think he just got tired of competing, and wanted to walk away. I think he fucked up subconsciously.

The folks at Jeopardy! haven't had ratings like this in years, and when the newest champions are shown to be normal, intelligent, four-games-and-you're-done folks, the ratings will drop again . . .

Jeopardy! had a lot to benefit from Jennings continuing his winning streak. And whether it's $2.5 million to one champion over 75 games, or $2.5 million to 15 five-game champions over the same span, there was no reason to buy him off.

I think it was an honest fuck-up on Ken's part, no matter what his motive . . .

Re: "I want my SUV" for $800, Alex. - 01/12/04 11:20 AM

A show that has been on this long and has been this sucessfull is not going to shoot itself in the foot and attempt to fix a result of a game. The integrity of Jeopardy is one thing I can believe in.

Graham, I thought the sxact same thing. They may not have filmed the show in December, but he knew when each show would be aired. The word seasonal got me at first too before I thought about H&R Block. Fed-Ex was a lame answer for him though.

It was surprising.

I'm glad as hell for the guy though. How often are people popular and famous and become semi-celebrities for being smart? It doesn't happen.

The little guy is an encyclopedia of trivia and his ability to recall the most obscure fact is absolutely amazing. Alex really seemed to take a liking to him and seemed genuinely sad to see him go. He was humble and almost apoligetic when he would win repeatedly.

Good for him for winning and doing it with rarely seen class and humility!

According to H&R Block, Ken Jennings owes 55.5% of his total winnings to federal and Utah taxes.

I'll take "Butt Rape" for 1.4 million, Alex.

And don't forget California state income taxes. According to Alex Trebek, Ken will pay more in California state income taxes than any other non tournament contestant has ever won.

He lost on September 7th. They timed the AIRING of the show to come in at the end of November ratings. He had no idea when it would air. [Geek]

ok, so how did the next show, where the woman who beat him lost on her first attempt, was one of the categories "Dec 1st"? I think it was just convenient that he lost during sweeps.
