I have not done it yet, plan to do it before next camping season and plan to follow these instructions:
http://www.nissanoffroad.net/how_to/transmission_cooler/transmission_cooler.asp

As far as a cooler, they are universal and usually rated according to the gross vehicle weight (including cargo and what you're hauling).

I will probably go with the 1301 from Permacool or comparable size from a competitor:

I used a B&M Super Cooler #70264 and been happy with it. Just a basic unit, but it serves my needs. Stacked plate desgin I like better than the fins & tubes that some other makers use.

Wolfman went with one a B&M also but the model with the fans and tstat. I think he was some pictures and a writeup on his web site so PM him if he does’nt post up. He lives in the desert so temps are more of a concern.

My install was pretty simple and I bypassed the stock in-line to the bottom of radiator and just used the ports on the B&M. Mounted to the passenger side bottom in front of the radiator with a small bracket I made. Kind of hard to get good pixs with all the stuff, skids in the way but if you need one let me know.

My 4-runner has one like wolfs from the previous owner and I added a manual rocker switch for the fan because I wanted some control.
