New tires rub the front on turns

New tires rub the front on turns - 26/04/05 07:13 PM

I just replaced my factory tires and wheels with some Bridgstone Dueler AT's. 31x10.5's and put them on 15"x8" wheels. I'm having problems with the front wheels grabbing that plastic wheel well molding on the front when I have the wheels turned to the max either way going either direction. Is there a quick and cheap way to fix that? How much do 3" BL kits cost and is it worth it?

You talk of 15x8 rims. Are these factory? If not then you may have the wrong back spacing.

A quick and easy fix is to trim the plastic part that is rubbing.

Torsion Bar Crank and Shackles $50. And trim some of the plastic on the back side of the wheel well.

The 15x8" wheels are not factory, they are American Racing, but the spacing on them is fine. I assume you're talking about the spacing between the wheel and the inside of the wheel well? They are 8" wide. However the lug spacing is the same so the tires just stick out the side of the truck a tad more. I've tried cutting away some of the plastic molding already and yet they still rub. I don't want to completely screw up the look of that molding by cutting away so much of it that the tires will finally clear but then it would look funked up.

Okay I'm dumb...what are "torsion bar crank and shackles" and what do they effectively do to the front end of my truck?

Calmini has a set of heavy duty lift shackles for around $50 but they only talk about lifting the rear of the truck 1.5" I need to lift both the front and the rear at least 1.5".

Okay....I figured out what you were talking about when you said "Torsion Bar Crank" but I have no idea how to do that. I can order the shackles and also thinking about getting an "add-a-leaf" kit from Calmini to raise the rear, but I don't know how to "crank" my torsion bars. Any help?

The shackles lift the rear end, and by cranking your torsion bars (how the front end of the '00-'04 X is sprung) you can lift the front end the 1.5" to match the rear...simple

I went through the same thing many moons ago when I went with my AR Outlaws and 31". Here are my final trim pics

It might be cut, but unless you are an X maniac, you wouldn't know the difference.

Edit.. lifting, cranking won't really help the rub issue, you'll still have to trim.

BE SURE to take the weight off the front, use jack stands. Do not adjust with the weight of the truck on there. Take your time and do it right.

Yes I stressed the weight thing, you do not want to stress the bolts. It is not a part you can just find anywhere. And of course dangerous.

Yes trimming will most likely still be necessary with the wheel offset. But not as much.

Okay guys. Thanks for all the help. I ordered the Calmini heavy duty torsion bars and the shackles for the rear. I'll be sure to take the weight off the front too when I crank the torsion bars. So do you think I should get the "add-a-leaf" kit or the shackles for the rear? Both say that they lift the rear 1.5 to 2".

I thought you already got the shackles. Don't do both without the UCA's (formal 3"lift), otherwise you'll be ass-high.

Do a search in this forum for Shackle lift, AAL's, torsion bar crank, etc.. and you'll find the information.
