$2.00 Crush Washer?

$2.00 Crush Washer? - 01/03/04 06:04 AM

After taking advice from a few knowledgeable members of th XOC, I went to the dealership to pick up a crush washer for my second oil change.

I recall that several members mentioned dealerships giving these away for free, or charging a nickel or dime. I got two from the service department, and they rang me up. $4.00!!! I couldn't believe they charged me $2.00 for each of those tiny pieces of copper.

For the most part, my dealership is decent (Courtesy Motors in Altoona, PA), but their service is a little pricey. I feel like I'm getting ripped off from my dealer. Is there anywhere else I can get the crush washers? Or is this the average price most people are paying?

Thanks for the tips. Definitely have to start ordering them. I just hope shipping doesn't even out the cost of getting them at the dealership.

Or you could just get something like the Fram Sure Drain and not need to replace the crush washers anymore! smile Not to mention it makes oil changes easier.

Makes ripping it right off on the trail easier too! I dare say that even with my skids that thing would stick down nearly flush with the hole cut in it to allow access to the drain, and hell, that's after my drain bolt took a lick a long time ago (before the skid) that pushed it and that whole corner of the pan back in on itself a good 1/4" or more. I'll stick with the bolt, thanks! wink

How could it be easier? The Xterra is by far the easyist truck I've ever changed oil on.

Well, you need a wrench or socket to get the plug out and then you need a small screwdriver or something to pry the copper washer off the bolt. With the Sure Drain you can do your oil change without any tools and the hose drains the oil right into your container without oil running down your arm or anything. Plus I don't have to try and find the crush washer or remember to get them. smile But you are right, the X is pretty damn easy.

Brent is right about the SUre Drain sticking out a bit more too. It sticks out about an extra 1/4" or so over the regular drain plug, and tht's partially sideways so the actually clearance loss is probably less than 1/4". With the skids on it's not that big of deal to me.
