Went to fill up the X the other day and to my surprise gas went down a whole shit load. Last week I filled her up with 93 octane @ 3.49/gal and just yesterday the price was down to 3.15/gal for 93. 34 cents in one week is awesome but it leads me to believe that I was paying 3.49/gal for no other reason then hype.

$2.81 premium 93 here
One thing I noticed this morning was where there used to be a .10 difference between grades, now there getting farther apart and uneven splits.

However the closer you get to the freeway the more expensive it gets. Up to 15 cents more.

I've come to the conclusion that any time (at least here in AZ) the price of gas drops, the damned OPEC'rs are getting ready to make another substantial price increase. Sell it for $3.00/gal for a while then drop it $.30, only to jack it up to $3.25 for another year. ![[ThumbsDown]](graemlins/thumbsdown.gif)

Unfortunately, there's too much money to be made on fossil fuels in the meantime, and as sad and unfair as it is, that joke about the Golden Rule is true - they who have the gold make the rules. Big money contributors (like oil & auto companies) have billions to spend on "helping" things go their way, so things generally go their way. But by the same token, as fossil fuels are depleted, there will be so much money to be made on providing an alternative powerplant that it'll happen in plenty of time.

For that price difference, it's *almost* worth it to drive the 15 miles...*almost* Absolutely. Filled up in New Jersey on Sunday for $2.71 a gallon. It's still hovering around $3.00 here. Some stations lower, and a few miles away as high as $3.10 or more.

Google "cracking oil" Many refineries in the east have these installed and can produce a significant amount of fuel from the worthless asphalt that is left over after refining. North american oil has a larger amount of asphalt than middle eastern oil. But, your local highway department hates these towers. The gas shortage will be replaced with an asphalt shortage. Once asphalt become profitable, expect more to be made, reducing the gas supply, increasing prices all around. Notice the dividing line on the map for cheap gas. Western states oil refineries were slow in purchasing the cokers http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx

I recognize that prices pretty much have to go up over time... so I don't expect the $1-$1.25 that it averaged when I was in HS... but $2-$3+ just ain't right. I think it ought to be between $1.50 and $1.75... with those super high California prices topping out near $2.

I think it ought to be between $1.50 and $1.75... with those super high California prices topping out near $2. Gas should be cheaper. Much cheaper. At least in the US. I would say... in the United States gas should be around $1.00 to $1.50 a gallon depending on region and market and local taxation rates. The problem lies directly with OPEC. They are a cartel that is gouging us. They artificially decide production levels and keep the supply low, therefore inflating prices. Some member states are now even cutting side deals with countries like China whereas China doesn't pay the prevailing rate on the open market. Consumers in the West are unfairly getting screwed. Politicians are aware of this but do nothing about it. Congress is also partially to blame because they have not passed legislation enabling US entities to sue OPEC in federal court. One of the worst judicial decisions in US history came from the 9th Circuit (no surprise there) which stated OPEC could not be prosecuted under the antitrust laws of the Sherman Act. They gave OPEC the right of a sovereign immune foreign power which it doesn't have because these powers are engaging in business activities. Business activity does not warrant foreign immune sovereign power. So anyone who tells you that the judiciary does not screw with your life and wallet is lying. The last action in this area was that Congress was only interested in giving the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission the right to sue OPEC. Which means they don't want the people or private organizations having that authority. That doesn't speak well of Congress (it's people in both parties too by the way). OPEC is a monopoly that is allowed to have it's noose around the neck of every American consumer. There are other reasons that some politicians don't want low gas prices.... Some local governments make huge windfalls of taxes every time the price of a gallon of gas goes up. Here in NY for example, the tax on a gallon of gas is not a static fixed amount. It is based on a percentage. When gas goes up, the taxes the government collects goes up exponentially. Many local governments like these tax windfalls and do not really want them to go away. Some of you have been reporting some low gas prices. The price of gas at the closest station to my house is $2.79.9 as of today.

That's why the last time I fille up in Chicago was over a year ago when my gas tank was on fumes and even then I put in 2 gallons so I could make it to work and fill up here.
Just recently Chicago's gas prices were atop the 3 highest in the country, if not THE highest at some point.

Around $2.27 today, lowest I saw in the area. I'm glad I didn't decide on a diesel truck a couple years ago. Same stations are still holding out for $2.79 or better for diesel.

Off topic, just watched a Trailer Park Boys rerun about the differences between gas grades and diesel Ricky: [about their illegal gas station] Regular goes into this can, premium into this one and diesel into that one. Cory: How do we know which is which? Ricky: By tasting, you moron. Regular tastes sour, premium tastes a little tangy and diesel actually tastes pretty good.

It's still mostly in the $2.20's around here - but yesterday we were in Mineral Wells and filled up at a Wal Mart for $1.99!!!
You could save an additional 3 cents/gallon with a Wal Mart card - but we don't have (and don't want) one.

A couple of stations on the south side of Atlanta were having gas wars this past saturday. It got down to $1.50 by Sat. evening. Back up to $2.25 this morning.

Here we go again  Want to save some real money? Eat at home instead of a restaurant. Or better still, cook something instead of some pre-processed crap. Not only will it be cheaper, it will be much healthier for you. Why do Americans focus obsessively on gas prices?

Good point, Doc. It's always so easy to get caught up in these gas price threads. I have to occasionally remind my wife that driving 12 miles to the bargain-priced station instead of 1 mile to the one around the block (which is usually only 3 to 5 cents per gallon more expensive) is not a bargain.

Docno, The problem is, many people (including my wife and I) already did everything we could to save money in all the other things we buy. Then when gas prices shoot up, it really hurts the wallet. By the way, the cheapest gas around here is still $2.70 a gallon.

Other great ways to save money: cancel cable television subscriptions and do something outdoors (or ... gasp ... read a book), use the library instead of buying books or paying for internet service at home, don't buy $3.00 coffee drinks (make your own at home or work), don't go out to the movie theater, blah, blah, blah ....
