While appreciate the fact that they risk their lives for us, every time I have needed their services they were little more than completely worthless.[/b]You're right - not all cops are as dilligent about their work as they should be, but you can say that of every profession which employs people - yours included I'd bet. The potential for a successful investigation isn't great to begin with. My point is that you shouldn't do anything that will make the successful resolution of the case even more difficult if not impossible.

True, but they don't hand everyone at my company a gun and a steamer trunk full of public responsibility as soon as he/she gets hired. The "bad cop" situation could be vastly improved if we were to take some of the money from the school boards and pay cops what they're worth (for starters). Then be more selective about the ones we hire and keep.

Minnesota has been among the leaders in making this transition through strict licensing requirements which relate to education, background, and a host of other factors. This same movement is afoot all across the country but some places are much further along in the process than others.

Just hired 250 kids here in Mesa, straight out of College and into the Police force.
Give a 20 year old kid a Gun and a Badge and he thinks he's god.

Hell - give a 40 year old a gun and a badge and he's going to feel the weight of that for a while. It doesn't take long for most new officers to learn the low relative value of these things when they interact with the worst society has to offer. A gun and a badge don't mean much in those circles and that lesson only has to be learned once.
The average 20 year old today shouldn't be trusted with a driver's license and a cell phone at the same time. Let's hope the selection process is yielding those who are above average regardless of their age.

Wow, our cops just say stuff like "Well, you might as well kiss that stuff goodbye. You will never see it again." Gee thanks, I had not figured that out.
