For those of you who don't mind no services, crummy roads, primative camping, & etc., think about giving the Steens in southeastern Oregon a try.

The Steens range is the tallest fault-block Mountain range in the continental U.S. It rises a little over 1 mile from the desert floor. The highest point is 9,700 feet.
Kiger Gap on the west side of Steens. Not the Grand Canyon, but impressive nonetheless.
