I'm thinking about getting some Yokohama Geolandar A/T II tires for my 2002 SE. The stock tire size is 265/70/16. Looking at the specs for these tires the two sizes seem to be close. The advantage of the 245/75/16 is that tread depth is 4/32" more, although tread width is almost an inch less. Overall diameter and revs per mile are equal.

P265/70R16
Approved Rim 7.0-9.0"
Overall Width 10.9"
Overall Diameter 30.7"
Tread Width 8.3"
Tread Depth 13/32"
Static Radius 13.7"
Revs per Mile 676

LT245/70R16
Approved Rim 6.5-7.5"
Overall Width 9.8"
Overall Diameter 30.8"
Tread Width 7.6"
Tread Depth 17/32"
Static Radius 14.3"
Revs per Mile 679

The extra tread might mean more traction in mud and snow and longer tire wear, but less width may compromise that thought. The slightly narrower tread may improve fuel mileage, but a little more width means better floatation offroad. The stock rim is 16x7 which seems to be better fitted for the 245/75/16. Why didn't Nissan make the stock rim 16x8 for the 265/70/16 stock tire?

Any opinions?

I don't think that the Geolander looks like that great of an offroad tire at all. I am sure that they are great on road. If your offroad performance is important to you, then I would go with BFG AT KO's. They are decent on the road, have great wear, and are very impressive offroad.

For the X I would get the LT since it will be a sturdier tire than the passenger version. Doesn't Yokohama make the LT in the 265 width?

As far as the Geolander goes, it's actually a very good offroad tire and has good onroad performance. Problem is most report that it doesn't last very long.

For a tire with similar offroad performance and better onroad performance and wear, I would look at the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo.

BTW, don't even worry about the width in mud. Those tires will pack up so fast it's not going to matter! With snow, narrower is better in most conditions because the tire bites through better. Only time wider is better for snow is if it's super deep and you're offroad. Don't believe me, look at the winterized ralley cars or old videos of Model T's driving through snow and mud with only one drive wheel.
