I haven't seen anyone comment on these tires before. Anybody have any experience with them?

I read a few reviews for the ATR's on other websites (and it's rated as the #1 AT tire on tirerack), and they all seem to say good things. However, I'm not sure if the tire is meant as a "lower profile, larger rim" style or if it would be a decent tire for the X.

I'm looking at the 265/70/17's...

I'm also considering the BFG AT's in the same size, though the best price I can find is $260 per tire before tax and no balancing/alignment. Also, I know everyone says trimming is not a big issue (i.e. easy to do and not visible)...but I'm always hesitant to "cut" away pieces of my X. Still, price is the major issue with the BFG's for me.

Most of my driving is on pavement, but I still want a tire that can perform well off...and of course, it needs to look good. :p

I think the ATR is a newer tire. I can only comment on the regular Scorpion A/T, but maybe that will help? I went through almost 3 full sets of the A/T's and I liked their onroad traction and handling (except compact snow and ice). Unfortunately, I had a hard time keeping them balanced and 3 of them developed sidewall air leaks. So I guess in terms of driveability I would recommend them, but the overall quality is questionable, IMO, which would strike them off my recommendation list these days. In comparison, the BFG A/T's that I am running now don't have the same level of dry road traction, but they are better in fowl weather, more quiet, smoother riding, and so far the quality doesn't seem to be an issue. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with the BFG, and there are reasons it's the #1 selling A/T despite it's higher cost.

thanks chuckh. Reading about the balancing issues people have been having with the Scorpion AT's are what caused me to mark them off my list.

I haven't been able to find a price on one of the ATR's yet (in Canada). On tire rack they're about $130. I found one Canadian site that had them listed as originally $290 on sale for $213.
A few other places I had to call to get a quote, left a message, and they called back 3 days later with more questions rather than an actual quote (I thought I was pretty clear when I asked for a quote on 265/70/17 pirelli atr's installed and balanced on a 2002 Xterra)

I wish I could find someone with an X who has the ATRs...I don't want to end up regretting not getting them, but also don't want to be the guinea pig.

I think I freaked out one lady in an X (was it anyone here) yesterday...Was coming out of the gym and noticed an X with BFG AT's... It was parked and nobody was around it so I just took my time and examined it up close. However, it was dark, and I had my hoodie on....

When I got into my X and started driving off, I noticed the lights turn on inside the other X. I figured I'd stop and ask how they liked their tires, what size they were exactly (was too dark to make out), and how much trimming they had to do (I didn't notice any). There was a car behind me so I couldn't stop and had to drive forward a bit more. I pulled to the side and figured if the driver went in the same direction as me, I'd ask about the tires at red-light we'd most likely stop at ahead.

The X drove by and the lady driving was giving me some strange looks...figured it wasn't the best time to ask about tires.
