Yup, now that the new low-sulfur diesel is becoming mandated, Nissan is finally able to offer diesel engines again. The Xterra and Frontier are slated to get the new FD41i 4.1L inline-6 common-rail diesel, with preliminary output of 215 hp and a whopping 330 ft-lbs. of torque, and is expected to average about 27 MPG. The diesel engine is expected to command a $2300 premium over a comparably-equipped VQ40DE model. Introduction of the new diesel models will begin after the 2007 model year is already underway, the first diesel models will show up at dealerships in November.
The Titan is also getting this engine, but in a turbocharged FD41Ti form. The turbo version's output is boosted to 285 hp and a mind-boggling 460 ft-lbs. of torque!
All I can say is it's about damn time, but unfortunately, I won't be in the market for one. I have no intention of replacing my 2000 model, though an engine swap would be mighty appealing!
Brent

I don't feel bad about that. If it were true you still couldn't get one in CA.

Why? The new emissions standards associated with the new low-sulfur fuel won't make C.A.R.B. blink, they're pretty damn clean.

You're wrong on the turbo engine availability. Us Canadians will have the FD41Ti available in the Frontier as well as the Titan. Guess we work our trucks more and justify the more powerful engine in a smaller truck

I got this from an asphalt trade magazine. It is focused on asphalt, but also goes deep into the fuel trade.
Because we import so much diesel fuel from abroad, we could see a reduction in supply because many of the foriegn refiners have yet to install the equipment to produce the new low sulfer fuels. The oil refiners do not see growth in the US and an increase in production costs. Most are predicting up to half of the current supply will be cut off and sent elsewhere around the globe, becasue of the new standards.
Expect the current price of diesel to triple by the end of the years as the new standards kick in.
27mpg at $9.00/gal is not less costly than 19mpg @ $4.00 gallon
Gasoline supply will also decrease, but not as much because it is easier to meet the new standards.
Domestic supply is expected to get a 15% boost by 2009 as domestic oil refineries construct cokers. Cokers can take the oil-bottoms (asphalt, heating oil, motor oil) and turn it into gasoline & diesel.
So not only is gas and diesel going to continue to rise, The once cheap products from oil bottoms will rise significantly.
Gas & diisel sell for about $600/ton while oil bottom products sell for about $2-300/ton. An oil refiner would be financially stupid to produce oil-bottom products after a coker has been constructed, unless the oil-bottom products demand a price equal to fuel.

I take MPG over power in a truck any day. Been waiting for the diesel option for 7 years.

If diesel skyrockets, then we wouldn't be able to live no more. Soon, tomatoes will be $15 a pound and a t-shirt will cost $100 because of shipping. Xterras will sell for $40,000 base because trains can't afford to run no more.

i googled "FD41Ti" and "FD41i" and got nothing. so until you provide a link im raising the flag this may be a joke, but i would like to see diesels come back in the smaller trucks. i also wanna see how they fit a straight six in the engine bay. not saying its impossible, just pretty tight fit ya know.

I knew it was BS too, but give me a 350 lb/ft 27 mpg X and I'd trade my junk in immediately.

wouldve been better if you wouldve said TD41i since TD is one of the prefixs for their diesel engines.

Now that this thread has got me thining about it, why don't Nissan and other SUV makers offer diesels with the new 2007 emisions and low sulfer fuels coming?
This is the only way SUVs are going to survive in this "NASA-priced gasoline" day and age. Those Tahoes might be selling hot right now, but if gas hits $4 a gallon (it already is up here), those 18 mpg small blocks are just not gonna cut it. A V6 Duramax getting 25 mpg on the other hand, just might save GM's big utes.

Check the prices of diesel fuel in your area. It's even more expensive than premium fuel. Now do the math. Yes, diesel engines tend to get a little more MPG, but when you factor in the higher cost for fuel (not even talking about the more expensive motor), the gasoline engine is still cheaper to operate.
If diesel fuel was cheaper than gas, like it was in years past, the public would be screaming for more diesel engines.

If diesel fuel was cheaper than gas, like it was in years past, the public would be screaming for more diesel engines. Where I am diesel is 5 cents cheaper than regular. And if the difference really is 27mpg versus 17 mpg, then it's worth it. I'm not talking about performance diesels here - A 360hp Duramax or V10 TDi getting 13 mpg isn't useful at all. I'm talking about economy, mild powered diesels, like the one mentioned in the joke.
