Hi electronic geniuses.

I nearly wrecked my 2000 SE this morning when a Honda cut me off. When I hit the horn, I got a pitiful "bleeeeet" like a baby cow, not the usual sound. Looked at some forum postings on "horn" and went out and started poking around. This is what's up:

1. I reactivated the beep that goes when you hit the door lock fob = normal subdued honk.

2. Holding down the panic button = normal high-ish pitched honk, louder than when locking the doors.

3. Hitting the horn, the pathetic beep seems to come only from the grill area, apparently from that downward pointing horn unit. I unplugged it, peeled back some electrical tape, wiped off some of the vaseline someone put there, put it back on, honked the horn, no change. (The vaseline and tape may indicate that the horn has been replaced before?)

4. Started checking fuses under the hood. The fuses marked "horn" and "antihorn" seem fine. I am unfamiliar with the row of larger box-like things next to the fuses there, one of which is labelled "horn". Maybe theses are the "fusable link" whatsits? Also, there's a separate box closer to the windshield that has one section labelled "horn". Didn't know how to check any of this so I figured I should stop and seek help.

Next step, pending your help: I DO NOT KNOW where this second horn unit is supposed to be on the 2000, the one that apparently produces the normal antitheft sounds. I will disconnect the front horn again and hit the panic switch to set it off so that I can locate it, but that seems to be working normally anyway so I don't know what to do, really. I'm going to test the CC tonight.

I'm changing the oil in the next couple of days and would like to resolve this issue at the same time, so please help.

THANKS!

The antitheft horn and the horn are two different items as you know. The anti theft horn is up in the engine bay on the left, it looks like a speaker (goldish in color). Also if the fuses are fine and all the wiring seems fine. I would just replace the horn (horns are pretty cheap).

Go back where the vasiline was and make sure the connections of the wire are good(like where they attached the new horn). Also make sure the horn is mounted securely and there is no rust between the horn and the frame (I'm thinking the horn may have lost a good ground). If you have a multimeter or test light, test the wire that supplies power to the horn and it should show 12 volts when pressing the horn( your gonna need a buddy). If it doesn't, it's pretty easy to say the horn is done. Yes, they are pretty inexpensive. Good luck
