hey guys i just got a used 2000 XE with all the packages for that year, but obviously the sound system sucks. I'm wondering what a decent replacement system might be like? and maybe how much i can expect to pay for one? thanks a lot

Take a look over at www.Crutchfield.com and see what stuff fits. It'll at least give you a good start on what prices you are looking at.

Nice screen name!
Dayspring is right, Crutchfield has alot of great stuff. Check out the Alpines that they just got in, its a bit pricey, but the head units are really powerful

The first thing i did was upgrade the 6x9's to sony xplod 3-ways with a 200w MTX amp, only because i had them in a previous vehicle. I then added an 8 inch bazooka tube. Most reacently i have added an Alpine model 7893 Head Unit which i absolutely love. I am totally satisfied with the sound of the system. The front stock speakers will eventually be replaced but sound much better with the Alpine V-drive. Just some things to look into.

I would consult crutchfield as to speaker replacement because i have heard many require too much depth for the X. Good luck!

I replaced everything in my X with Alpine stuff (except for the tweeters) It cost a pretty penny but well worth it. The 2 12" subs really sound good and make it all worth while. Easily paid over 1000 for it all.

Look around on crutchfield to get some ideas and see what fits, but don't order from them. There's so many other sites out there that have equipment for almost 1/2 of what crutchfield charges.

For a head unit I'd look at Pioneer, Alpine, JVC has some good decks. Speakers I'd check out focal, mb quart, infinity, JL. Subs, look at adire audio, JL, Alpine, Infinity. Amps, look at cadence, mtx, jbl, us acoustics...... just a few names to get yo going. Overall I'd say to stay away from sony stuff. The overall quality of their car audio equipment is pretty bad.

In other words, be an ass and don't give them the money even though they they're the ones with the good web site. Just order from the guys who don't care enough about you as a customer to go through the trouble of coming up with a fit list like Crutchfield. Tell me, what are you going to do when there's nobody left in the world to "use"?

And Neil, another good reason to use Crutchfield is that they are extremely good about returns. When you order something from them, a prepaid return label comes with your order. So if you want/need to return something, you slap the sticker on the box and give it back to the UPS guy. Absolutely painless.

Guess what buddy, crutchfield isn't the only audio company with a good website. Look around and you'll find plenty of them. There are also plenty of other sites that have excellent customer service. I'm sure crutchfield is a great company with their pretty website and their custom service, but they're not the only ones. If I can get the same thing crutchfield is offering for much cheaper (without having to sacrific customer service) I'm going to go for it. If you feel like spending more money, be my guest, I'd rather save money.

What's up your ass tonight? Sheesh...

Crutchfield's nice, but they do run higher. I bought my Alpine 7894 from them at a higher price, only because I needed it quick and with a dash kit (has anyone noticed that it's hard to find one for Xterra's? I can't even find a Scosche dash kit). Lots of places offer return labels with the shipment... sounddomain.com, onlinecarstereo.com, etc...

That's wonderful. Then user their website! This isn't rocket science. Crutchfield is more expensive, yet they are still very succesful for a reason. Think about it.

I'm not your buddy, and if it is the case that there are so many other great web sites, why did you tell him to check Crutchfield and then buy from someone else?

Where else would you point a person for online information on car stereo? Get a life dude. I think you're the 1 out of 5 mentioned in your sig.

If the person doesn't know much about car stereo, just from looking at the web sites they'll see the crutchfield has the possibility of being worth the extra dough. If you're worried about things breaking or aren't very knowledgeable about stereos, than ordering from crutchfield is a good idea.

Well I can see this thread is going nowhere. Neil, sorry you didn't really get any good answers to your question. PM me with what you are interested in and I'll try to help you out. If the rest of you assholes want to have a flame war then start one in the ALR. This is not the place. [Finger]
