I had a set of 2 FRS radios with the 38 privacy codes. One of the radios broke. The replacement will probably be a different brand.
Will the new radio's 38 subcodes be compatable with the old radios subcodes?
The old radios are cobras and I've heard that there is sometimes a compatability problem. The cobras talk to my radio shack FRS radio just fine though.

They will work fine! Our club uses Motorolas and Cobras. The Cobras are annoying because of the sqwack they have when you key them!

Most should work. However, the cobras that my ski patrols friends use can hear me and my friends on the talkabouts, but we can't hear them. But those cobras don't have privacy codes I believe.

That's not the only reason they are annoying! They also squak and squeak at the person using them at random because they do indeed seem to disagree with the Motorolas in some way. Mine did anyway. I wanted to throw it on the trail and drive over it a few times! Another thing is that you have to speak louder into the Cobras for other people to hear you. It's well worth paying a few dollars more for the better quality Motorolas.

I have tried several brands and have been with
users of various brands. Motorola seems to be
the only 100 percent reliable brand.

We use all different types in my club. The Motorola's seem to be the best for clarity and not cutting off any speech at the end or beginning of a transmission.

FYI...
I actually purchased a pair of Uniden radios on Amazon a few weeks back (on closeout). They were about $25 for the pair with shipping, but I can not find them on the site now...
They have an interesting carribeaner (sp?) type clip and do not have an antenna.
So far - so good.
They do seem to be compatable with Motorola's as we were able to have a brief conversation with someone using them...

I agree, the cobra's "roger" beep is annoying.
