When I start my car I litterally have to push my clutch pedal all the way to the floor. And when I get towards the floor, really close, it makes a squeeking sound. I have also noticed that i need to press the clutch in pretty far to switch gears. Any suggestions on the having to press all the way in or the squeeking?

You should push your clutch all the way in. Failure to do so will prematurely wear the friction plates (so will resting your foot on the clutch pedal.)

Sounds like you'll be looking into clutch repair in short order.

although I want to laugh.. I wont..

make sure your clutch resevoir is at its fill line.. possibly bleed the system if it's never been done before. my cars clutch system started being stupid after a few years of hard driving- i just bled the system and got my pedal back.

another thing: check your master cylinder to make sure it's not leaking.. check the slave cylinder as well..

another thing: have you recently replaced your clutch? if so- did you install it correctly? ie: torqued all the flywheel bolts correctly, lubed the splines (if necessary in your app.).. etc..

another thing: is it time for a new clutch?? smile

another thing- sometimes the pedal itself will 'squeak'.. spray some silicone on the bushings up under the dash smile

REMEBER: ALWAYS!!!!!!!! depress the clutch fully to the floor when starting vehicle/switching gears...ALWAYS.

but- if you have to slam the pedal to the floor, and tear carpet behind the pedal like i did.. you might have a problem smile

...toodles..

I have drove many sticks before and something just don't feel right. I mean I litterally have to put some body weight on my clutch to get the car to start. And i am putting my clutch in all the way but it feels like its engaging back into geer when i let off of the pedal even a 1/4 inch. NO i did not just replace the clutch and the resevoir is full. I have not bled my clutch though. Never bled one before... just checked my repair manual and dont look hard. I will try that next.

bleed the system first and see if that helps.. another thing is to check around the master and slave cylinders to make sure they're not leaking.. the smallest leak will cause a problem- it honestly sounds like your slave cylinder is bad.. the slave is (in my car anyway) the part that pushes and retracts letting the clutch engage and disengage.. if that TOB is not moving, you're not getting any pressure on your clutch- making you have to push it hard to the floor in order to get some movement. is your slave/TOB original to the truck?

you're probably due for a new clutch.. i'd say.. and while they're/you're in there, replace the slave/TOB at the same time. I've never done a clutch on an Xterra before, so I don't know if the slave/throw out are internal or external.. but it's best to replace it anyway with the clutch. that's probably your problem, but without seeing it myself I cant say definatly- but it really does sound like that's it. goodluck,

Sarah smile

PS-Xtra_blue.. good job [ThumbsUp] :p

Mine is the same way. It is also very hard to depress even during shifting. After rush hour traffic, I feel like I just had a workout.
(any ideas for that?)

Anyway, if you look down by the clutch pedal, you will see the switch for the starter. It can be adjusted out a bit. That may help a tad.

Is the pedal sticking at all? Are you having any issues with your cruise control? If you stick your head down by your pedal and look straight up, you will see a 10mm nut that might need to be tightened.

My cruise was acting goofy for awhile, working intermittently, and my clutch pedal was sticking because I had to press it all the way to the floor to change gears.

I checked the servo, and it worked fine, so then I went to the clutch pedal and noticed that the 10mm nut was loose. I tightened the nut, and now my cruise works great and my pedal is back to normal.

I hope this helps. Sorry about my book of an answer!

there is a wire you can splice a resistor into that will make it so you can start the engine without the clutch completely depressed, but that makes it easier to start the car when it's in gear, which can be very harmful and even cause a wreck.

gauging from how you're already having trouble with the clutch, i'd suggest you don't do that and just grease up the pedal to get the squeaking to go away.

always press the clutch all the way in. you're not in a drag racing funny car, be nice and easy with it and sooner or later you'll be caressing it like it was your sunday office sex buddy.

I don't have cruise control, I have the bottom line moddel of the ex. I am going to get down there and check for loos bolts etc. as soon as it stops raining here in FL. We had 2 tropical storms already this year and it looks like dennis is going to hit hurrican cat 3 strength frown us floridians love some TS and hurricane parties but not this early in there year and nothing above cat 2.

I baby my clutch, always press it in all the way. Just don't think I should be ptting body weight on it to get it to the floor. I have noticed that when I get near the floor I can feel what feels like springs or something that don't want to go farther. Then i got an inch after that to the floor. I am going to grease it up and check for loose bolts etc. as soon as the rain stops here. Also gonna bleed the clutch fluid out and change my traney fluid before I have it checked out. If it still giving me any problems I am going to have it looked at.
