Hello everyone, I want to get your opinions about towing. My X is an 04 5sp 6cyl. The popup I just bought weighs in at 1670lbs dry. Im figuring an extra 400lbs for gear, food, ect. I know that the tow limit is 3500lbs for a manual tranny. My question is, are there any tricks or things that I should know about towing this trailer. My X will be wired with a electronic brake controller. Im expecting my mileage to drop to about 10mpg from the 17mpg im getting now.

Should be no problem towing the pop-up. Your mileage should not drop hardly at all; you are not towing a trailer that causes any wind resistance, so the mpg should not drop. Good luck!

His mileage will drop, but I agree that a trailer of that size shouldn't pose any special challenges.

Don't slip the clutch too much and you should be fine.

My mileage drops to about 8-10mpg when towing my pop-up. But then it does weigh 4200lbs. loaded.

The secret to towing with a small engine is use rpms.. never let it lug down. If you are climbing any kind of a hill stay up above 3000. Also use your gears going down and save the brakes. I have put 300,000 miles on Nissans and never lost an engine. Enjoy.. Mojave

We tow a 1000 lb 13 ft. Burro. By the time we load all our crap, it's probably up to 2500lb.
Tows fine but the mileage drops to 12-13 mpg ,depending on wind and how fast you want to travel.

For the outlay of $70 you can put a friction sway control on which gives a bit if extra security (in the dry). I'm not sure the X needs one but since I started out towing using a Jeep Wrangler I rapidly came to appreciate them!

Blizzard - I hope you're exaggerating about the 2500lbs. At best the axle on a Burro will be rated for 2200lbs, when new, & even if you are running ST175/80R-13(C)s you'll be getting close to the 2700lbs max combined loading. Burro's have a habit of cracking the frame too.

Mine's a Husky, got it on eBay for $60. There is currently one on there for $45 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4527076596&category=50072
All you need in addition is a mounting tab for the Sway Control Ball like this http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/mercha...ategory_Code=SC & weld it on the side of the ball mount. Or for more money eTrailer also carries bolt on ball mounts

I'm talking about all the crap we load inside the Xterra , not loading the Burro that much. Can't put much inside anyway. Just guessing on the wt.

Just wanted to add that the sway control makes HUGE difference in how it handles while driving. We tried to go without it once (forgot it) and didnt go 5 miles before we came right back home and slapped it on.

Our Starcraft is a MONSTER to tow and sways with the slighest of a breeze. That bar stops it dead, well worth the $.

Ok my girlfriend has a 2000 X 4cylinder 5 speed, would she be able to trailer a horse trailer with 2 horses in it? It would probably be 4000lbs

You might go faster if the two horses pull the 4-banger.

I'd seriously question the sanity of towing 4K lbs with a 4 cylinder.
