I was told that if you look on the plate on your drivers side door, the number will tell you your ratio. My 490 code on my 04,is suppose to mean that I have 4:90 ratio in the diff.

I don't want to hi-jack your post, but I have a similar question. I was told that my 01 has a 4.63 ratio I believe. What year is the earliest that I could find in a yard to get the 4.93 to swap in? I was wondering if I could just do the whole third member, even if the new one has LSD and how much problem install would be? Also, what would I need off of the wrecked X to get the front set up?

Use the search feature, type in "gear ratio". I read a post talking about getting 514+ gears that you would need to really make a difference if you are using big tires.

Remember that if you change the gearing in one diff, you need the other to match too...or else you put alot of stress on the drivetrain...a few percent difference can easily be a problem.

The work to go from a 4.63 to a 4.9 range is not really worth it though.

It's 4.90. 10 teeth on the pinion and 49 on the ring gear...that's assuming it's a V6 4x4.

So, TJ, what gears would you go to that would make it worthwhile. Your talking $1000 in parts alone, so is it really worth it?

I do notice the power difference with big tires on the highway, but it has not bothered me off road.

I have 33's churning with 4.63's...and I don't feel like I'd do a gear change to improve things...my cruising RPM is very relaxed now.



I'd do a low range t-case swap before I'd do a diff change.

If I was running 35+'s monster meats, and I was shuddering on take off and never got to use 5th...I might go and plunge towards 5.88's or something in that range...but it would have to really bug me.

I have 4.9's now. I am planning on doing front and rear lockers next and just wondered while i was in there if I should change them as well. I'll save the money.

While I'm at it, do you know any ARB installers in NJ? I called ARB, and the closest to me in NY is Bedford Hills, NY. NJ may have on closer. Otherwise, I'll do it myself.

If you're going to do the lockers it would be no more work at all to install the larger ring gears...And it would help your crawl speed over those rocks we were on at Paragon last weekend. I covet the crawler t-case gears myself...of course, I have a 5-speed and have to sometimes choose between banging around on the rocks or trying to go slowww and smell my clutch burning.
