Was wondering if anyone has had trouble with the rear wheel bearings and seals on the 05+ Xterra's. I have a 07 OR and have had to have both driver and passenger side replaced, one side at about 25k miles and the other about 31k miles. Just wondering if there is an issue with these parts?

Interesting. I just had the entire rear axle assembly replaced on my 06 as a warranty job. The pinion seal and bearing were shot, but the dealership decided it would be easier and wiser to just replace the whole unit.

"Easier" = They don't know how to rebuld a differential.

The seals failed, which usaully indicates that the bearings are gone. The seals leak differential fluid onto the rear rotors and rim. Makes a mess.

thanks, with 96,000 miles the only issues have been: carbon canister (fuel system)valve failed, and around 84,000 had weird sound that i thought was the pulley, turned out to be the chain guide, replaced everything under extended warranty (2,500). currently having issues with fuel system- gauge not working. overall i really drove this truck all over the country under rough highways and i am very happy. i look forward to purchasing a replacement xterra when i am able to.

I wouldn't allow the dealer to rebuild the diff anyway. I'd fight for a trans shop with diff experience to do it right the first time, which is probably why Nissan opts to replace the entire rear axle. They also decided they didn't want the old unit back, so I'm picking it up tomorrow morning to rip it apart for laughs and see what shape the pinion set and the spider gears are in.

Hhhhmmm, strange. If it is a warranty repair, they have to send the rear back to Nissan.

That's what I thought as well, but it was headed for the dumpster.
