Anyone heard of this (or know what a solution may be)?

Every once in a while, the wireless on my laptop will mysteriously disable itself. Last night, I went to bed and I know that my wireless was working. When I woke up this morning, the laptop's wireless was disabled. The only way I could get it to reenable was to reboot the machine.

Mozy was running when I went to bed, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Could it be related to a "Sleep", "Standby", or "Hibernate" mode that the machine is set to enter into after a period of time?

Possibly. But the odd thing is it doesn't do it every time. I have gone in and changed the setting so that it cannot turn off the wireless to save power.

But even if that were the case... what would cause the problem of not being able to enable it without rebooting? When I right-click and select "enable" the window pops up saying it's enabling it...but then it doesn't. No fail message or anything.

Dell Latitude D830 with XP Pro.

Norton AV. Going through an Apple Airport Extreme.

(If Norton was causing a problem, I wouldn't be entirely suprised...I don't think it's possible to say how much I hate Norton...but it's a work computer, so I have no choice.)

Hmm, that's interesting. I had this exact problem on my laptop that came with Vista. I lived with it for over a month and couldn't take any more of it. I removed Vista and put XP Home on it and haven't had a problem since (been over a year now). Have you tried finding a different driver for your wireless card?

Yeah...it's very odd. I'm hoping that making sure the computer can't turn off the wireless does the trick. No idea how long it will be before I can say that's the solution - since it was a random thing.

What's managing the wireless connection?
Windows, or a 3rd party app related to the driver?
Whichever it is, try the other.

It was being managed by Windows. I had switched from Intel's management just after getting the computer (over a year ago). I am switching back to Intel to see what happens. (Honestly, I don't remember why I switched to Windows in the first place.)

hmmm I had a bit of deja vu when I posted above about switching management utils. I wonder if you switched last year as a result of basically the same advice being given to fix a different problem? That would be kinda funny(but still valid to to try).

Did you check with Dell? I think I remember hearing about a similar issue with the D630's
