New to these forums.
2005 Xterra SE 4x4. Auto. 120k miles. Since about 75K miles there has been a nasty hum coming from the rear end of the vehicle under power. I have heard theset ypes of hums before in other vehicles and it is almost always a wheel bearing. HOWEVER, the Nissan dealership said it was the rear end and that would be a $2500 fix... Any opinions here?

drain and refill with a good synthetic would be a good start. see if it helps, then go from there.

Recently had a front wheel bearing go bad. The noise got louder and louder within just a few thousand miles. Doubt you could have gone from 75,000 to 120,000 with a bad bearing and not have it seize up by now. Agree with prior poster - replace fluid and see what happens.

The 2nd generation Xterra has issues with the rear differential going out. This is especially true with the 05. They went to 2 spider gears on the 06 and that reduced the problem, but my rear differential went out at 11,000 miles on my 056, so they aren't immune, and the receipt they gave me showed $2500 for the fix. It was under warranty so I didn't have to pay anything, but if it goes out again not sure where they money will come from since I am no longer under warranty.
