before people flame the heck out of you it would be cheaper, more reliable, and easier just to buy an 05. the laundry list of issues and problems are way to many and would make it foolish to attempt

It's not to crazy of a question...I mean how many jeeps do you see out there with Chevy or Ford engines in them...my buddy just put a chevy engine into his 84' CJ7

Thing is Tom, Nobody should get flamed for taking an '84 and modding it with a new engine.
Now a barely broken in '01, I think that's another story.
More power to 'em though.

Pre-computer, pre-emissions engine changes are a totally different thing. Relatively easy to do within space limitations.

I think you would have huge space limitations along with the computer problems that would make it a real pain in the ass. When you got it done you'd still have a cobbled machine that cost way too much.

Just make the payments on an '05 and have the warranty to boot.

Yeah, i kinda figured I would get flamed, but thanks for your opinion guys. It was something I thought of today and was just wondering if it was even possible.

VQ engines are wider than VG's and the exhaust manifolds would have to go in favor of some totally custom headers for a start. Also, transmissions, tcases...that's not a direct bolt in either....you'd have to do a full drivetrain swap. Wiring harnesses will be different....I agree...it wouldn't be worth the trouble unless you're at the level of a master technician.

I seem to remember Calmini/Nissan teaming up and putting a 3.5 VQ from the Pathfinder into an 03' Xterra. An engine swap is a definite possibility in an X, just maybe not with the 4.0 due to the dimensions.

That was Project X - a 2002 Xterra. It had a full drivetrain swap from a QX4. I know the guy who built it, and he put a LOT of hours into it. He's probably one of the most knowledgable mechanics I've ever met too. The custom headers he built for it were a work of art.

And even it had electrical gremlins when completed.

You would have to do sooo much work, drivetrain mods (adapter for the engine and old transmission) as well as the computer mods. Fly by wire throttle anyone? Nope, I myself would hesitate to attempt the swap.

I actually thought about doing the same thing. I never liked the 3.3 in my '03. I always wondered why they didn't have a 4 liter to start with. I could just go out and buy an '05. However, I heard the '05 interiors suck.

I actually came back to this forum, because I am considering owning an Xterra again. This time as a trail rig and not a daily driver.

I wanted to see if anyone had tried dropping a V8 from a Titan into an '01 Xterra. Any thoughts?
