I know there are several XOCers who are fairly experienced with video editing. I have a project coming up for work where I'll need to create something that's 5 minutes long and will likely exceed what Microsoft Movie Maker can do. We do not have access to macs here, so iMovie is probably not an option.

We have the funds to purchase something like Adobe Premiere, but I wanted to see if there anything else out there that comes recommended with similar features at a reasonable price tag. We don't have visions of doing this professionally, just every once in a while our office might want to produce a video. In the past, we would use Movie Maker and we have gotten by with just that.

We're mostly interested in the ability to show side by side split screens with different video sources. Can be top/bottom or quadrant splits.

any recommendations on software?

Premiere's pretty good. A lot of people like Sony Vegas.

Premier for the video, Audacity for the audio track... Blender for any logos and captions, animation fx, cool "bullet time" stuff etc.

a lot of people like Power Director, but I find it to be a PITA importing through Firewire...

I also like Vegas, but it's a PITA once you get used to Premier. Also, the Lite Premier is more than enough for home users unless you want to do complex DVD authoring or have a 1-2 setup etc.

Still using Ulead VideoStudio over here.
Although I've upgraded from version 9 to version 10 since this last come up - lol.

Not sure if it does that though - never tried it.
You can get a free trial/demo from their website though.

I use Avid Liquid which was $99 for the student/teacher edition at one of the academic discount places. I use to use Premier a number of versions ago.
