Just food for thought......
What do you do for a living and is it what you always wanted to do??? Or is there something else you had your ambitions set on???
Im currently in the Army I really do like it but if I had to do it again the US Coast Guard would have been it. Oh well.
Just interested to see what others think?

I grew up dreaming of keeping a cubicle warm for 8.5 hours a day, five days a week.
Dreams can come true.

I wanted to be a pilot. But my eyes went to crap about the 8th grade or so.
So instead, I design airports.
I'm ok with that! Still get to be on airfields with some regularity, and still get to play with planes; just not in the way I originally planned. But not too bad, either.

x2 And except for the dark office, that's what I do now. Ideally, I'd like to own my own company someday, but who knows. I'm co-founder of a small firm right now, and those after hours phone calls aren't very fun.

I keep a cubicle warm too while I manage a couple multi-million dollar vendor relationships and try to keep all the Dilbert-esque masses happy.
I would have much preferred to stay in Forestry - I worked for the USFS seasonally for 7 years through high school and college.
But...you can't make a good living on seasonal, hourly work.
Then again, I plan to hang up the corporate hat on my 50th birthday and retire to my land 30 miles from the Grand Canyon South Rim where I can hopefully get another one of those seasonal jobs working in the park, or for the Kaibab National Forest nearby. I'm hoping for the good fortune to come full circle like that.
I also dream regularly of being a Powerball jackpot winner.

I'm an in-house attorney for a forest products company. Haven't been here long, but so far I like it a lot. Decent amount of travel around the US, good mix of legal and non-legal work, an interesting industry, and good co-workers. I'm quite satisfied for the time being, though I can't say I necessarily planned to end up in this type of position. If/when I do eventually tire of this, my law degree gives me a lot of alternative options that I can consider, and I'm thankful for that flexibility.
Plus we're saving like demons and are planning on an early retirement (though still a ways out since we're still in our 20s).

I wanted to work for an airline but ended up working for an air cargo company. I was 25, made good money and had a company car but hated my job. So I quit and took a part-time job with a small airline called Muse Air . I made $5.35 an hour (this was 1986) but never loved a job more. Southwest bought Muse Air and changed the name, and ultimately shut it down in 1987. American hired me and I had a great career there for 14 years. Left for an opportunity that would have been great had it worked out but sadly it didn't. Delta hired me and I was there for a couple of years before being laid off in late 2004. Now I'm a fire/police/ems dispatcher but I miss the airline industry and know that sooner or later I'll find the right opportunity to go back. Even if I never do, I can say my dream did come true. I worked with many great people and traveled places I never could have gone otherwise.

I work in the service dept. of a large crane rental company. I handle all the warranty issues for all 26 branches.
I always thought it'd be cool to own a night club thats well known and people would be dying to get into. I too have thought about a burlesque house. There has to be alot of money in that.

Architecture was always my safety net to fall back on. That's what I do now. ![[Freak]](graemlins/freak.gif) Unrealistically, I want to be a baseball player or play golf on the PGA Tour. Realistically, I would love to design video games, especially sports games. I would also love to work for a professional sports team (doing anything) as well.

I wanted to remain a college student for the rest of my life but after 5 1/2 years I began to feel a bit old looking at the baby faced freshman...so I fell in love, moved in with my future wife and had to get whatever job I could near where we were going to live and ended up yelling at people for Toyota for 8 hours a day telling them that if they didn't make their car payments I'd be sending the Repo man to their house...Now I have an office at a bank where I surf the net all day and occasionally work on writing proposals for multimillion dollar loans for auto dealerships....Not in the least bit fun or interesting... If I could do what I wanted to now?? Probly move to UT and either work at a National Park or go back to school and learn to be a qualified mechanic...

I broker steel buildings for commercial and residential purposes. More specifically, I sell red iron framing, structural steel, and light gauge to clients who are looking to build just about anything you can imagine. Honestly I love what I do for a living because I'm fascinated by construction. While this might sound crazy, I also love the challenge of converting someone from a stick built mindset to steel. Hmm... if I could rewrite my life though and choose another career. I'd like to be an engineer or whatever you'd call someone who makes innovations to home appliances. I'm very intrigued by technology around the home, and I'd like to work for Fridigaire or GE or someone like that.

I get to ride a big red fire truck 10 whole days a month and have the other 20 off to do with what I please.
I also wanted to work construction as a kid (like my father) and so I went to college for that. After getting my degree and working as a project manager and estimator for a few years, I tried out the volunteer fire department that I'd wanted to do since a kid. An opportunity came about to go career firefighting and figured I ought to try it while I'm younger than older. There is NO way I could be back to 7-7, 5 days a week! I get way too much time off now.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut. I ended up working for a software company as one of two online knowledgebase admins. I'm a Jill of all trades--I train, edit, write, mentor, project manage, analyze stats, create graphs. It's something different every day, and I really enjoy it. If I could pick any job right now, I'd want to be in charge of timing stoplights so that when the one you're stopped at turns green, the next one in front of you doesn't immediately turn red.

I wanted to drive a car that weighed like 1000 lbs, with no fenders, no extra seats, and a 1000 HP engine that would do in excess of 200 MPH. That's all I ever really wanted to do...
Currently, I drive a 40 ton, 75 ft. long truck that maxes out at a road scorching 65 MPH after 10 minutes of acceleration. It's hard for me to imagine that there are actually worse jobs out there.
And then people wonder why I carry a rope in the truck...

Hard to think back that I wanted to be a Bio-med tech. Joined the U.S. Navy back in 87' stayed in the Reserves while going to college. Started working for UPS while going to college and have been working for them ever since. 18 years of driving the big brown truck. 12 to go and then i'm done! I could've been fixing equipment in a nice clean environment, instead I work like a sweathog all day and try not to yell a the garbage truck blocking my way...I'M ON A TIME LIMIT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!NOW MOVE IT!!!!! No really I don't have high blood pressure now.

I wanted to be in communications repair. Cellular, Line of Sight (SHF etc.) Figured I'd work for a cable or phone company some day. Ended up becoming a Network Engineer/Systems Administrator and I also command and deploy portable satellite communication systems for our (MSHA) Mine Emergency Operations group throughout the US. It's pretty cool, and though most times somber, getting out of the office and actually going on rescue/recovery missions really breaks up the "office" lifestyle Grayham is so fond of. Pays pretty good too...

Since I was little I've wanted to have a job that would take me to many places around the world. I love outdoors and it's hard for me to spend the whole day inside.
Currently I work as an Inventory Manager for a local cellphone carrier and I have two stores. 10-6 5 days a week Mon-Fri with many, many Saturday morning meetings.

Let's see. In grade school, I wanted to be a train engineer on a passenger train (that, after taking a train trip in 3rd grade). In early junior high, I thought driving a Greyhound bus would be so cool (that, after taking a long bus trip to a Boy Scout Jamboree). In early high school, I determined that designing cars would be really cool (that, after getting an insider's tour of the then International Harvester plant in Ft. Wayne, Indiana). At the end of high school, after taking mechanical drafting my senior year to fill up the school day (I only needed to take one English course to graduate, but they insisted that five periods of Study Hall was not acceptable), I decided I wanted to be a draftsman, or even better, an architect. The only architecture school in the state was full and had a waiting list, so I went into "something to do with computers". I ended up graduating college with a Computer Science degree plus about 16 credit hours short of an Electrical Engineering degree. Since graduating, I've continuously been in the computer software/design field. Spent time with intelligent controls, factory automation, good ol' cubicle work on client/server systems, and now I'm back into low-level hardware control and specialized real-time programming in "Intelligent Traffic Systems" (a fancy word for tolling systems). I love what I do now. It's exciting and fascinating to be able to write software that controls RF equipment to read toll tags, controls toll collection devices, controls violation enforcement cameras and controls systems that gather information from in-road sensors that can determine the speed, length, axle spacing, presence or absence of dual wheels of a passing vehicle at speeds in excess of 160 mph (we've tested it to that level). What's cool is that so many people interface with my work products on a daily basis, directly or indirectly. If you're ever on a toll road in Austin, Miami or Denver, be sure to wave at the pretty cameras.

i went to school to be a drafter too. got my first job as an internship working at the airport. i was a drafter there for 2.5 years working on airplanes doing mechanical and electrical drafting. i left there to work for my dad. i was a civil drafter(land development) for about a year and back in jan., they put me out in the field on the survey crew. i love the outdoors, so its a great job and i really enjoy it. but last week, dad told me i was going to be getting laid off within the next 2 weeks, so im back looking for another job. when i was younger, i wanted to work construction. my very first job was running a skid loader loading mulch on the weekends. i was hooked. now im looking for a job in excavation where i can get training on the job since i really dont have much experience. one day, id like to own my own excavation business, so with the civil design, the surveying, and hopefully the excavation training and onsite experience, im working in the right direction to make my dream come true. all i need to do now is hit the lotto and get my CDL's.

I have always wanted to be a veterinarian, by the time I got to college, I thought working for the DNR would be cool. I am currently the Water/Wastewater Supt. for a suburb of Minneapolis. the pay is ok, but definately not what I expected to be doing.

Just out of High School '91, I started working for the State of AZ at the Child Support Enforcement Agency, moved over to Family Assistance Administration and finally resigned due to conflicts with my Communist Boss from Lithuania.
Got Suckered into a Pyramid Scheme, Designed Wood Truses for about a year, Ran my own short lived PC repair Co., Delivered Flowers for about 2 years, was assistant Manager for an electronics testing/certification house, Sub-contracted to Aviation Communications and Serviellance systems Maintenance before being layed off, Worked for Honeywell's Maintenance group, Sold Kia and Buick Parts and finally ended up where I seem to like it most.
Back to ACSS. Now I get to take care of about 300 people's whiney asses and Approx. 250,000 Sqft of office/manufacturing. I get every other Friday off, 3 weeks Vacation, excellent 401K and 15% off L-3 Stock twice a year.
Was told that they will reimburse my Tuition and now I can't decide what to learn and get a degree in, without it I can only make about $42K and with it I can make $10K more a year.
My Dream was to Race, Anything! I love the competitive nature of it. Maybe someday.

I graduated college with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and started working for an office furniture manufacturing company. I worked as a project engineer for two years improving parts and material flow. Last year we were in the midst of a multi-million dollar expansion project where I programmed all of the new equipment. I thought my efforts payed off when I was promoted to production supervisor, but I absolutely hate my job now. Honestly, I'm not really feeling much for office furniture anymore.
I'm thinking about going into architecture, or maybe something outdoors. I don't really know yet, but I'm still 25 so I've got plenty of time to decide.
As a kid I always wanted to be a racecar driver...I still want to be a racecar driver.

I am a Personal Trainer. Before that I was a Strength & Conditioning coach for the Colorado Rockies and Oregon State University. Sport and fitness has always been part of my life, so it is a natural fit and I love everyday of it.
I set my own schedule, based on how much $ I want/need to make and if I wanna go away for a long weekend, I do it. I am my own boss and I get to choose who I want to work with.

First dream was to be an F1 Driver, then I went through my Military Phase and wanted to be a pilot in the RAF (Royal Air Force). Got hooked playing on computers at High School just as PC's were taking off, studied IT at college. Jobs so far: UK Jobs - Paper Boy - Insurance Company Underwriter (First job out of college) - IT Manager / CAD designer for an Engineering company (CAMB Machine Knives). Started getting into Web Design and built their site, which still bares my name 8 years later: http://www.camb-knives.co.uk - Micoprose / Atari / Hasbro Interactive. Landed a job in Tech Support for this Computer Game developer, it was a dream job - Playing computer games all day and helping customers with their computer game problems. Supported over 200 software titles - Until Infogrames (Fucking French) took over the company and closed our office. Was the closest I got to being involved in F1, we developed the official FIA F1 game and went to a few free F1 races. - Went back to the Engineering company for a while, as I applied for my Visa / Green card to move to the US. US Jobs - Arrived in the US 2 weeks after 9/11 when the job market was at a real low point. After 3 months I managed to luck out with a job as a dispatcher for a small trucking company. Company was made a CRST agent and I was taken on by CRST to oversee the S/W office. Company decided to end relationship with CRST and merge with a low life scum company called Expressway STS in Phoenix. Expressway slowly fired all of the employees from the company I worked for including me. - Worked collections for 2 weeks. Worst job on Earth, but the 2 weeks training in the Fair Debt Collection Practises Act was interesting. - Worked as a Driver of a 24ft Box truck for 4 months, doing collections from clothing donation boxes around the valley. - Lucked out with my current employer GoDaddy.com through an Employment agency who looked me up on Monster.com, worked Phone Sales / Support for 3 months, got promoted to Email Support, got promoted to Reseller Support, got promoted to Reseller Support Manager, got ptomoted to my current position in Quality Assurance. Been there 5 years this year - Excellent company, Excellent benefits, GoDaddy has done alot for me and my family. There - my whole employment life!

I grew up wanting to be a police officer but my eyesight was just too bad, so that idea fell through (laser surgery then was not very common or practical and now, well, I'm just too old). Decided that I wanted to do something in law, so I became a Legal Assistant and I was going to work my way through law school. Well, things like marriage and kids happened and those dreams died a slow death. I now work as a secretary in the Construction department at the school board. It's interesting but not something that I've dreamed of doing.
My hubby has always wanted to be a police officer. He's been a courier parts driver, a maintenance/battery changer, newspaper delivery guy and a custodian and finally this past December he was accepted by the local police service and he is finishing up his training and will receive his badge on May 10th.
Dreams do come true if you just keep on pursuing them.

I have also trained several national level bodybuilders/pro atheletes etc;. SO...yes. I can tell most of the time if an athelete/average joe is using substances. There is more to it than just physical looks, there are a lot of mental/emotional cues that the individual isn't aware of themselves. Most of the time if an individual looks like a freak, there is a reason besides good genetics.

I also only work 10, 24hr shifts a month, and ride/drive a laddertruck or ambulance. 20 days off a month...gotta love it. When I started a senior FF said to me,"you spend a good portion of your life trying to get a job where you have 20 days a month off, then you spend the rest of your career trying to get that other 10 off!" In all seriousness we rarely sleep through the night, train and bust our butts when we're working...except for Sundays ! Prior to being a firefighter I wanted to be a BLM ranger, but fell into firefighting by chance.

My baseball players also went to the CWS every year I was there and finally won last year. How's the track squad doing? :p That probably sounds like weak smack, but given our history in track I'm honestly happy that we have a track squad as opposed to a baseball squad. It isn't called Tracktown USA for no reason. Probably not the place to start the Beavers/Ducks debate, but oh well. Everyplace can use a bit of Duck/Beaver smack. To be totally honest I actually like the Beavs a lot - I root for them against everybody but Oregon. Lots of Oregon State grads among family and friends. The only team I truly hate in the Pac-10 is UW. Nismo - one tip-off is when a 40 year old's head is still growing. ![[Freak]](graemlins/freak.gif)

I'm more interested to hear if T-Ray has any inciteful "behind the scenes" information that we may not hear. Also, is it something that you ask the players when they are injured, or is it ignored? If you find out, how do they keep you quiet from saying anything? You know, stuff like that. See, I should be doing something in sports.

TV Weatherman.... hours.... 3am to 11am... I'm up every morning at 2am... I enjoy it, but I have essentially two jobs...
I have two sons and two foster daughters... one is adoptable, the other is not...the adoptable one is 4 months old, african american, and has HIV... and although I'm a typical white bread american male, and she is african american... she has only known me as her daddy and loves me unconditionally. She is the "smileyist" baby you will ever meet. I also have two sons who keep me challenged with guy things.
so...
My days are filled with weather, and then my kids... essentially two jobs. The weather job can sometimes be boring, here in Texas, but the kids make my "afternoon job" worthwhile.

Bluesky, you're right as far as hours go, we do a 56 hr work week. We just put in the 3 eight hour days in one sitting, once and a while it's nice to get paid to sleep though. :p

I thought for the longest time that I was going to be a veterinarian. But, then I joined my high school paper and realized I could write better than I could dissect. Up until senior year in college, writing for a newspaper was the plan, but then I dabbled some in technical writing classes (figuring that if my brother could do it, certainly I could) and, lo and behold, some computer company offered me 2.5 times what a newspaper would, and I signed on. Now I'm a product documentation editor and hate the hell out of it. But, I have a fat 401(k) and hope to live long enough to enjoy it. Seriously, I've been considering opening a bakery a lot lately. I bake all the time and can imagine how wonderful it would be to be my own boss.

I wanted to live in the Candian wilderness and survive on my man-skills, but I ended up being a Marketing Coordinator for a German Power Tool & Abrasives Company (Metabo). Can't complain, but I'd still like to live in the woods!

I wanted to be a pro baseball player, I got as far as college where I got some interest and then got hurt. I then moved to my second dream of being a rock star. I got as far as being a part-time professional musician. So I guess I have lived 1/4 of a dream while I work full time doing computers.
I blame Bush.

I grew up in kitchens and cooked professionaly until I was 25. I always thought I'd end up owning my own resturant..I was burnt on the 80-100 hour work weeks though, and no longer had any creative control, I was just a babysitter. So, I got into food sales via my seafood/poultry vendor, and did that for 7 years. I was tired of working at that point, so I went fishing, for a year . When I got low on money, I came back to PHX and took the same job I still have 8 years later, selling industrial chemicals B2B. I always wanted to eliminate ne'er do wells and evil tyrants from the planet, but they just don't post those jobs too frequently.

Hat hander? No. Funny though. But it's part of my job to prep our drivers on sponsor mentions and make sure they have the right hat on when they get out of the race car. Cleezy, I'm living the dream buddy. I negotiated and executed the deal to bring Baldwin Racing into the TOYO tires family. I also formed partnerships with Ironclad Performance Wear, KMC wheels and Sway-a-Way with Baldwin Racing. In a few short months, we redesigned the vehicles, the merchandise, wrapped the transporter and are reestablishing one of the great programs in off road racing from a very expensive hobby into an income generating business. I logged over 2000 cell minutes last month just getting ready for teh season and we're just scratching the surface of the potential in short course off road racing. I'm actually working for a living which is new and different and at 37 I've been reborn.

Yes it is.
Ricky Johnson Returns To Championship Off Road Racing
Newport Beach, Ca. (February 5 , 2007) - Ricky Johnson announced Saturday night in front of a packed Supercross crowd at Anaheim Stadium that he would be returning to Championship Off Road Racing. Johnson, a Baja, Supercross and one time CORR™ Pro 2™ Champion, has joined Baldwin Racing. Returning to the track for the full 2007 CORR™ season, Johnson, who provides color commentary for the CORR televised broadcasts, will be stepping out from behind the microphone and into an 850 horsepower Baldwin Racing prepared Pro 2™ truck.
“Driving the trucks for the television broadcasts reminded me how intense it is competing in this series,” said Rick Johnson. “When I had the chance to race in last years Jason Baldwin Memorial Cup, I realized that I needed to get back into a full time ride.”
Along with his 1998 CORR™ Pro 2™ Championship, Johnson also has earned seven AMA/Supercross and motocross championships and multiple SCORE Baja 500 and 1000 victories in both motorcycle and truck classes. Johnson has also raced in the NASCAR Craftsmen Truck Series, ASA Pike’s Peak Hill Climb and was named 1999 ASA Stock Car Series Rookie of the Year.
“CORR racing combines the high flying excitement of Supercross with the door slamming action of stock car racing,” said Johnson. “To me, it is the most exciting form of racing out there right now and I can’t wait to get back into it. There’s nothing you can’t do in a CORR™ truck.”
Johnson joins Pro 4™ driver Josh Baldwin to form a formidable alliance for the upcoming 2007 CORR series. “With all of his experience, Ricky brings an incredible amount of talent and knowledge to the team,” declared Baldwin. “With him driving the Pro 2™ and myself in Pro 4™, Baldwin Racing is looking to make an impact this season.”
Baldwin Racing competes professionally in the Championship Off Road Racing series as well as the premier Trophy Truck class in the SCORE International desert racing series.

It makes for even more fans in the pits. The stories of the behind the scenes of the show are pretty funny too.
