Don't know if this accident made national news - but it sure is a big deal over here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/04/30/TANKER.TMP Now there's something you don't see everyday.

I made the decision yesterday to not leave the house today. I gotta be in Sac tomorrow morning, not looking forward to that.

I made it out of the area just in time. I was in Oakland doing a project for the whole of last week. If that had happened earlier it would have severely impacted us. I know we were only out and about at night, it was a project we could only do at night, but I only saw about 4 Xterras in the week I was there.

It be faster for you to take the Golden Gate and use 101 to 37 through Napa to get there. This link shows some alternatives and the detours.

for the conspiracy theorists - what a coincidence that the truck just happened to crash just at the exact 100 ft stretch where a monster fire would do the most damage. IF it had wiped out 100ft earlier or later and the fire would have just burned up into the air instead of getting trapped under another structure, doing the most damage. In defense of the driver, that curve is a real killer. There is a long straight section on hwy 80 and then the road splits and if you aren't especially attentive, that curve gets on rather quickly. At 3am - he was probably on mental cruise control and hit the curve going 70mph instead of 50mph. It's a mistake that ALL of us do - its just that this time was (MUCH MUCH MUCH) more costly. Nobody died - which is amazing all things considered. The driver somehow crawled out before the fire got him and he walked 1.5 miles to a gas station where he found a taxi which took him to the ER. The guy even tried to pay his fare when they arrived - the taxi driver wouldn't let him, considering he was all blistery and bleeding from crawling out of a burning tanker truck. ![[Freak]](graemlins/freak.gif)

. Ha, if you think the truck driver was bad, you should see the way the rest of them drive there! Most of the trucks are doing 60 and the cars are doing 75+ weaving in and out of traffic. As a truck driver, just trying to keep track of all the retards driving around you takes most of your attention. That said, at 3AM, this driver was probably a bit on the sleepy side and maybe should have been stopped. I'm glad they don't send me there anymore... Portland, Seattle, and Boise are bad enough! Fucktards R us in the cities!

Something like that happened over here. Military operator decided to put a excavator on a flat bed but didn't lower the arm enough for the height of the flat bed. Took out a few signs but he didn't let that stop him. Kept going until he hit a pedistrain over pass at 2PM. At least you guys have more then 3 highways. Needless to say traffic sucked that night.
It would be a great time to be a construction worker in Oakland now. cha ching on the overtime.

Pretty cool interactive map of what happened. http://www.sfgate.com/maze/interactive/ The media is reporting more info on the driver. Robbery conviction in 1981 Heroine conviction in 1996 Both convicted and time served in prison was spent. I'm sure a robbery conviction 26 yrs ago has alot of relevance in the investigate. ![[Finger]](graemlins/thefinger.gif)

Minor earthquake hits area just a few miles (like 3 or 5 miles) north of the accident site. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/05/02/BAG28PJM1M4.DTL Only a 3.0 - no big deal. I didn't even feel it in downtown Oakland.
