A friend of mine once drove flat deck trailers and he still had these straps in the storage compartment in his tractor.. he said he had no use for them anymore so he gave them to me(4"X25') he had 2 of them.... they are rated for 12,000lbs with a min. break load of 16,200lbs and the ring is rated for 20,000lbs... I know steel hooks is not recomended for a recovery strap but shouldnt the strap break before the 20,000lb ring?
My question is what could I do with the other end besides tring to tie it off on something.
Thanx to all who reply tow straps

Are you sure those are tow straps and not tie-downs? And with the metal pieces and all, you're better off spending a couple bucks and buying a real strap.

True recovery straps are designed to stretch a bit to absorb shock, and the retraction does a lot of the work for you. A tie-down like that will have no stretch and put much more shock on the vehicles. I don't think I'd use them for recovery. An "assistance" pull perhaps, but not a good stuck.

thats not much at all if you are gonna yank with them. Ideally you would want at least 20-30k. I have a 30,000 one myself. They would be fine for light tugs though.

those not-stretch straps work fine for a non-yank pull or a tow, but for a good stuck requiring a little momentum, you really need a 20k lb+ strap looped at both ends. I have a "canyon crawler" 20k from 4wheel parts and the thing will not die. It has quite a bit of stretch to it, and the recoil from that stretch really does do most of the work.

I wouldn't even consider using them for recovery purposes. Possibly as an emergency tow strap, or perhaps a tree strap, but I definitely would not trust them for any kind of jerking or yanking oeprations. Please be careful, and read up on some of the horror stories out there. If you want a snatch strap, spend the bucks on a strap designed for that purpose.
