I just bought a beautiful new 2k2 Xterra. However, it does not have the tilt steering option. Is that something that I can add myself? My tall frame would like to adjust the wheel higher. Thanks.

I didn't realize they released a version of the 2k2's (or any year for that matter) without tilt? Are you sure it's not there (under the steering wheel column)?

That is correct. My 2002 X did not come equipped with tilt. Darn shame if you ask me...

You bought a bone stock, stripped Xterra with no packages, so you don't get the tilt wheel, or a host of other nice things.

I would have loved to buy a loaded X, but couldn't really afford the Nissan packages. So I bought the bare X hoping that I could add whatever I wanted to it.

So the question remains, can I add the tilt steering lever, or perhaps adjust the steering wheel another way...or am I just screwed?

You'd have to replace the whole steering shaft. Some 02's? for Canada were built without the tilt steering wheel. When I had the steering shaft tightened the dealer showed me the steering shaft they replaced with a tilt unit. It can be done.

The only problem with this philosophy is that it either costs you 5X as much to add the stuff later on, or you can't do it at all.

It could realistically cost you up to a grand (parts & labor) to do a steering column swap at the dealer, when you could have added a package for the same price and gotten your tilt wheel and then some....

Good luck.
