Musta been hot!

Musta been hot! - 04/08/06 04:03 PM

For the longest time I wondered if my temperature gauge was broken since I've never seen it go any higher than the half-way point. Well yesterday, for the first time in about 147K miles, it moved up a little higher than the 3/4 mark trying to keep 65mph going up some hills on Route 80 in New Jersey with gobs of other traffic in 100+ temps. I think I'll check the coolant level, just to make sure it's not just low.

That's funny.

The same thing happened to me last weekend. My temp guage has never ever moved once the truck has warmed up in 59,000 miles. The air temp outside was showing 102 degrees and I was going up a relatively steep grade with the AC on and maintaining a 75MPH clip with the overdrive off and the temp guage started climbing.

The damn thing freaked me out. I quickly shut off the AC, slowed down a little and everything got back to normal. When I was parked, I checked the coolant levels and everything was fine. I guess I too found out what the limits where.

Problems/annoyances and the drivetrain section have this covered pretty well.

Temp guages on most vehicles these days are "damped" to read the same within a "normal" temp range to prevent people from bugging their dealers with "so-and-so's identical vehicle has a lower temp than mine, fix it!"
It takes a fairly big variation from the usual to make it climb.

Must be an East Coast thing, thanks to our heat wave or at least a Rt 80 thing....

I just cracked 70K, and for the first time this week it rose just above halfway. Route 80 too...Hackettstown area... .Weird.

happend on my old truck, except it got up over the top line once, and i tried everything to cool her off, i even rode the shouder on I64 coming outa richmond va for almost 5 miles going about 30mph. it took me an hr and a half to get there that morning and 5 hrs o get back to where i was staying. i got the coolant completely flushed, but every so often on the interstate, it woud get warm.

We got about 43000 miles on our 01 and had the same thing happen last week. It was horrible here in Pa though, like high 90's for two weeks.

It's been back to normal the last couple days.

That was it. AC blasting, 100+ degrees, northeast, maintaining highway speeds. Glad to hear it wasn't only me!

Yeah, Chicago was under the heat wave just a few days back. 97*, blasting sun and high humidity...

I overheated slightly as well (started too) had to turn the A/C off.

It's about time the rest of the country suffered that heat. After it left the southwest, the low pressure that followed brought fog and rain here... nice...

I think the gauges in the X work well for stock ones. Do wish they came with oil and volts.(it's a'01)bummer

Re: Musta been hot! - 06/08/06 08:48 PM

Being in Arizona I'd like to think I know a thing or two about heat.

I can run around all day with the A/C blasting full bore without any problems. Lots of steep grades at highway speeds (like back & forth to Flagstaff this weekend) will bring it up to the 3/4 mark.

We (atleast I) even run the A/C while out wheelin'. I've never overheated, but I have turned the A/C off for a few minutes now & again to drop that needle a bit.

Anything over 120 dagrees here in the desert and I have to turn off the AC and keep the truck at about 3,000 RPM to keep from overheating when I stop.

Re: Musta been hot! - 07/08/06 09:39 AM

a few weekends ago, i was sitting in the parking lot eating some lunch and i watched as my temp guage went up to 134. it was in the mid 90's, but sitting in the sun like that really makes a differance. i usually dont use the AC that much anyway. i have found that for some reason, when i have it on cold on the defrost, it air gets cold even on hot days w/o the AC on. so i switch it to defrost for a while and then turn it back to me and its nice and cold.

I belive you have an electric auxillary fan. My 2000 does and I think the 01's do as well. They did away with it on the '02 models (cheap).

I have never had a problem with overheating on my 2000 X. One of these days I will put one on the 02.

Yeh, mine does too, I think that's the way to go.
Like you said, it's cheap.
Here in B.C. in the summer I run the X up and down the Fraser Canyon loaded with a trailer full of boat stuff, dirtbikes, and gear for my holidays.
Never a problem. I do think I'll put on a tranny cooler soon, it's cheap too. [ThumbsUp]
