Yeah, I remember that little thing. Was never really reliable, then again which soviet car ever was?

Niva is now owned by GM. They recently released the Chevy Niva Trophy. Which is not a one off, but a production model.

It comes with limited slip diffs front and rear, stiffer shocks, BFG AT KO tires (granted 28"), removable winch in front, roof rack along with hi-lift already attached to it as well as Hella lights on roof. There are also factory skids. No sliders, and a SNORKLE, out of all things! Engine bay is waterproofed, diffs, transfer and tranny breathers are extended higher up....

Wow, this does not look bad at all. The original Niva had pretty good clearance and overall it was not that bad. The new one looks sweet.

Still nothing beats a Ural or a UAZ.

I remember those, too. Now that I look at it, I kinda see an old Landy and a Willis in there.

As gas prices climb ever skyward, we need something in the same configuration as the Niva here in the states, but with solid axles and lockers. A three-door subcompact hatchback with high clearance, high fuel efficiency, and real offroad ability. Think the bastard lovechild of rallye car and rock crawler--half Mini, half Rubicon. If SUVs are truly "backpacks on wheels", a vehicle like that would be the GoLite approach: lighter, faster, more economical.

Or, Suzuki could just start importing the Jimny.

You can pick up a Niva in Canada. It not something that most of the Americans wil drive though Pretty small and really Stalin-styled inside. I know that there are some Diesel Nivas too. According to Wiki they were sold in Brazil for as little as $3K USD. I'd have two.

Now, if you want a street legal ATV, check Urals. I am *thinking* of getting one. Used to have it back in the USSR and it was a blast.

Yeah Niva is not something people would drive, unless they knew what it is beforehands.

Eh, even if you get it in Canada, still there's no way you get bring it in here. I don' think it will ever comply with the emission standtards.

Haha, It came that way. Looks like it could be fun but I think I would like to try a 4x4 chassis under my baja someday instead.
