I can see clearly where this punk went wrong.

2nd Post in the thread says it all. "Leave it up to the pro's."

At least noone was hurt or killed. [ThumbsUp]

ETA - Didn't he also put the lift on backwards? The pinion angle should have been up, reducing the binding at the driveline. He should have had some serious vibration at speed.

Re: Ouch - titan lift gone bad - 09/07/07 12:05 PM

Definitely looks like he put the lift blocks on backwards...nothing looks tightened at all in that pic...scary.

Re: Ouch - titan lift gone bad - 09/07/07 12:17 PM

That pick is scary as hell. The U-bolts are on wrong, the shocks look to be on upside down, the leaf spring does not look assembled correctly, the lift blocks are backwards, and everything else just looks like it's loose in there. [Freak]

Here's the primary culprit....and he took a pic for god's sake...

The U bolts are next to, not clamped over, the axle...If he were to drive the damn thing...the axle would twist out on that side because it was not held to the leaves.

[Freak]

I cannot BELIEVE someone would mount U bolts like that, its too retarded, like a bad joke...please don't tell me the truck was actually driven like that?

[Uh Oh !]

Ooopsie! Hahah. Creative application of the U-bolts, though, don't you think? When they're mounted that way, you can see more of their shiney bling.

I guess that's what happens when you are more focused on painting bling than putting it back together properly.

He made it 200 feet... [Freak]

OK...so today was probably the worst day of my life. First things first...ive been around cars my whole life and im 18 years old. I just finished putting an 8 inch 3 inch body on my 04 smoke titan. I did the sha bang i painting my suspension components, my axle, my driveline, everything looked beautiful and i was just leaving my house to go get my 37 inch kuhmo's and 22 inch KMC wheels mounted. I drove about 200 feet and i started to accelerate when i heard the loudest thing ever and my back end dropped. I am the luckiest yet unluckiest person for 2 things. not lucky cuz my axle came out but lucky cuz the body landed on the back tire cuz i was turning when it happened so the truck didnt just fall to the ground. So thats that my question deals with the way the leaf spring is supposed to be mounted. I made sure everything was absolutely correct before leaving today yet this happened. So are the U bolts supposed to be bolted on over the stock bump stop the way they are stock or are you supposed to put them just directly over the leaf spring or is there a aftermarket bumpstop i was not given or whats up??? Cuz thats where my problem came from. The place on the bumpstop/u bolt mount where the u bolt hangs over bent right down on both sides which allowed my entire rear end to give out. Ripping brake lines, bending new shocks, scratchign my new blue paint, bending my shock mounts, brake mounts, and even my quarter panel. NEEDLESS TO say i was pretty dang pissed today. It sounds like a lot of crap to be fixed but luckily nothing is really expensive cuz ive had to save long enough to just get everything done. Well ill appreciate any info or help i get. thanks

They're being pretty nice to him over there, all things considered, but that's an incredibly stupid mistake, and is something done clearly by someone who doesn't have a clue.

The point was made...he's lucky it went fast and not at speed.

Tool.

I actually lost a little respect for TitanTalk from that thread... Instead of criticizing, there's actually people ENCOURAGING this kid to keep at it!!!

Wow.

I don't know what's worse, the fact the kid is bragging about how he's "been around cars all my life" or that there are people actually encouraging him to keep being around cars...

Yeah, he needs to be around cars, alright. But he needs to be watching the mechanic at a shop do it, and asking questions, instead of what would be considered in court: manslaughter or neglegent homicide.

I call 'Bullshit' on all the people who are suggesting this guy should have gone to a pro. In the majority of threads on here that involve relatively simply work such as installing leaf springs, suspension lifts or minor mechanical work, folks are always encouraged to do the work their selves. After watching DBAX almost take an arm off with a leaf spring, bet your ass I'm being careful when I do mine on my 4Runner, but I sure as hell am not going to pay $80 an hour for someone at a shop to do it.
