Sony's PSP... Anyone get it? - 24/03/05 09:31 AM

Just out of curiousity... Anyone have one or planning to get one?! My co-worker just came from Target (he said they had a few left from their 50 units) and I must say, the video image looks outstanding... I dunno 'bout shelling out $250 for the unit, but I'm initally impressed by it...

I'm interested too but I will wait for the price to go down the same way I waited 4 years before I bought my Xbox! laugh In a few years I should easily spend $50 for a PSP and games for $5!

Gosh I'm cheap!

Right now im sitting in a hotel room in Yuma AZ waiting to go out to the field for 35 days of what the Army calls "Hot Weather Unit Level Testing and Evaluation Cycle Training." Two of my soldier bought them and they are awesome, graphics, sound, games, varity the only draw back is that they are expensive. Other than that if you travel alot they are cool. Movies are on the way too.

I couldn't believe it - a local Costco had a stack of 'em with an NBA game and Offroad Fury game bundled for $320 - a slight discount.

I really figured that places like Best Buy would be sold out - local Best Buy still had like 50 or so of their original 200 as of this morning. Guess the price is slowing adoption of 'em.

They had one out of the box and the video is indeed amazing. The controls are well laid out for the most part, and the interface is very fast and responsive. My only problem was the left and right buttons on the top - I kept pressing them by accident - it was rather annoying. Other than that, the size and layout is excellent. The analog joystick feel wasn't what I expected at all, but I really liked it.

Oh, if you google around - the PSP supports MPEG4 and there are already tutorials on the 'net on how you can rip your DVD and transcode it to watch on the PSP. Problem is you have to use Sony's proprietary memory sticks to store it and the 1 gig ones are outrageous. Here's hoping someone figures out how to burn UMD disks.

Also, don't forget the built in wireless networking - while it doesn't now, it wouldn't surprise me if they set it up to browse the Internet.

That\'s why you go with SanDisk.

Granted, at 160 bones it's not exactly dirt cheap, it still beat the shit out of Sony's card any day of the week.

I read somewhere else online that they were having alot of problems with dead pixels on them. People pulling them out of the box with dead pixels, and other people on the first day of using them that cracked the screen already because of the buttons being so close, and you know how some people get when they are playing games....they think if you press the buttons harder it will make you turn better, or jump higher...etc. But sweet looking none the less.

I've held two now, and neither unit had dead pixels. I dunno - it uses an LCD. LCD's are prone to dead pixels, it's a fact of life for any LCD. I think this is just another example of something negative getting magnified by the Internet...

If they cracked the screen they had to be abusing the hell out of it. The PSP is very beefy when you hold it in your hand.

And there was a problem with the square button when they first came out, but I'm pretty sure the units here in the USA have that issue fixed - because the PSP's I saw also had the clasp for the UMD disk drive door that keeps it closed too....

I know there's a legends mode for this version, but is there a Tour mode as well (with weekly stops on various courses, with four majors a year) like what the platform versions of Tiger Woods has?

I love the Tiger Woods series, especially since they switched to using the joystick for swing control, and my favorite part is playing the full tour season. Granted not all the real tour stops are on there, but they do have the four major championships. I'll never sniff one in real life, so this is as close as I'll get!

OK, I got the scoop on another forum. There's no tour mode in the PSP's Tiger Woods game. I don't think it's a deal breaker, but I'm still like WTF?!?

This is like developing a baseball game where you pick your team, then play great teams from the past instead of any kind of organized season.

EA dropped the ball on this one!!
