Re: MLB 06 talk... - 03/04/06 06:10 PM

The Cubs will finally come through and win the big one this year. [Too much XOC]

The real question is, how high would you rank the best NL team among the AL teams?

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 03/04/06 06:39 PM

Good start for Pujols(2 HR), The Braves started out good then almost blew a 8 run lead and Keith Foulke is going to continue to worry Red Sox fans. [Uh Oh !]

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 03/04/06 09:45 PM

I'm a die hard Cubs fan, and today's win was stellar. I am just not sure if they can keep it up. At least their bench has more depth than it has had since the 2003 season that they blew. Now, if their two Aces of the DL can get off the DL and actually do something, there may be something to talk about! The rookie in Left field is one to keep an eye on. Matt Murton ended last year strong and started this year strong. The threat of having an actual leadoff man in Juan Pierre, helps too....

I'm thinking "Crosstown Classic" here in Chicago for the World Series. Marshal Law would have to be initiated if that ever happened.... It'll go to the 7th game if it happened. The Sox are good, but they seem to have issues with the Cubs.

We'll see what happens...

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 05/04/06 04:48 AM

FEARLESS PREDICTIONS!

AL Playoff Teams:
NYY (money can buy you happiness...but not a world series...too old)
CWS (good returning core)
OAK (young pitching is a good thing)
CLE (it is their turn to make the playoffs)

NL Playoff teams:
ATL (no on has the pitching to beat them in the NL West)
STL (obvious, best team in the NL)
LAD (most upgraded team next to T.O.)
PHI (enough offense to beat ATL but not enough pitching in a hitters park)

News and Notes:
-most imporved team will be Milwakee (very young)
-most dissapointing team will be the NYM (again)
-Pierre, Figgins, Podsednik, Reyes will have a great race for the SB crown and someone will get 80+ (who cares about the HR race eh?)
-Manny won't get traded (who cares?)
-Bonds will play, bet booed, get hurt, look even worse, throw a fit, hit a reporter.... and then finally retire...good riddance
-STL will win 100 games again
-Ichiro comes back in a HUGE way
-Pujols decides it is time to push for 30-30
-the Cubbies season will die on the arms of Wood and Prior as Zambrano finally runs out of gas as well
-Ortiz eats poutine in Toronto for the first time, gets addicted and gets even fatter, eliminating any chance of him bending over for a grounder at 1B ever again
-Rolen returns to form and 'Murders Row' is rebourn
-Adam Dunn and A Jones hit over 50 HR but the real race is who can get to 200 Ks first
-best division in baseball will be the NL Central with STL, HOU, CHC, MIL all finishing above .500
-if healthy, STL finally wins the WS with the best pitching rotation in MLB and Murderers Row in full effect (..really, what did you expect?)

NYY vs OAK last night...I love watching Joanne Damon throw the ball in from the outfield. hahaha [LOL]

Yes, he did catch it...in the 9th...to save Foulke's ass. [ThumbsUp]

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 06/04/06 12:20 PM

I wonder if Damon can actually throw the ball from the wall to 2B? What a weakling....I am thinking Paplebon will be in soon for good as Foulke is a bum! Pujols with 3 HR, 3BB, and is 3-6....GO CARDS GO!!!!

I like my prediction more and more. [ThumbsUp] Although I'm not really going out on a limb because the 'Stros and the Chisox are obviously still the best teams in baseball until someone beats them, but they both look very strong again this year (barring any injuries). Once the 'Stros get the Rocket back, I definitely think they'll beat the Chisox this time.

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 20/04/06 10:28 AM

Pujols is a machine...10 HR and counting...and 17 BB...will be a big year RBI wise for Rolen and Edmonds if they stay healthy...I think it would be awful fitting if Pujols could slug out 75 HR and then everyone could forget about Barry whatshisname...GO CARDS GO!!!

[LOL] A break? Cubs fans get a break? [LOL] That's a good one. [LOL]

I thought the whole thing about being a Cubs fan is that you know you're a fan of a team that will never win the World Series and that's alright.

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 26/04/06 02:11 PM

The Giants are off to a pretty good start despite the Barry "situation." It's hard to imagine that geriatric outfield holding up for the entire season though. Oh well, at least we'll finish ahead of the Dodgers again. laugh
Posted by: GrumpyTom

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 26/04/06 02:25 PM

Sorry FlyFishing, but it's not gonna happen. I'll be amazed if the Giants have more than half their opening day roster available in the second half of the season. At least the Dodger's injury-ridden players are young... they could always turn it around and have a good number of years left. The Giants must have several ambulances just outside the fences waiting for someone to have a heart attack...

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 01/05/06 07:43 AM

Great first month of baseball I would say! How about them Rockies winning on the road!!! And the Cards are 17-8! When Rolen finally clears his chest and comes back it will be even worse for pitchers...Murders Row is back!!!! The Reds are obviously not going to stay at this level but it is fun to watch all the HRs for now...poor Cubbies...The CWS look good as expected...the Red Sox look better then expected...the NYM look good but will it last (nope)...I love watching Bonds flounder...best division in baseball is easily the NL East...worst is the NL West but the AL west is close so far...

I certainly hope the whole season isn't like yesterday for Pujols...4 BB (2 IBB)...what a pansy Robinson is, just pitch to the guy and enjoy it either way...there never used to be all this intentional walk bullshit "back in the day", either the pitcher won or the hitter won...Ruth, Aaron, Williams and all the greats never had to worry about getting walked 4 times in a game...what an April though for Ablert though....346, 14HR, 32 BRI, 27 R, 2 SB, 28 BB...cannot think of a better opening month (statisically) ever...I cannot think of anything better then Pujols knocking out 75 HR and taking all that away from Bonds...except maybe STL finally not choking in the playoffs...GO CARDS GO!!!

Um, ok.. wtf are you talking about? The three best teams in the NL are all in the NL Central... easily the best division... once again. The East has ONE freakin' team above .500, the Central has 5 and the West has 2.

BTW, why no mention of the Astros? Does it surprise me? No, they're only the reigning National League champs. [Freak] Don't worry, you're not alone. The national media does the same thing. That's alright though. We'll win it once again, only this year it will be much easier now that we have Lance to start the season. The Rocket will sign here shortly and we'll run away with the whole thing. laugh

Chisox vs. Astros II [ThumbsUp]

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 01/05/06 09:50 AM

Yeah I ment to say the NL Central...NL Central by far...just mistyped or something...

The reason I didn't mention the Stro's is because: A) being a Cards fan I hate them wink and B) I don't think the Rocket is going to play for them again so there season will die with him ...

Berkman has been spectacular, but Biggio is aging, Wilson is a bum, and Burke is a flash in the pan...Tavarez is a mystery to me though so far, could be huge but just isn't ther eyet?...W Rodriquez will flounder and Neive, Bucholz and Backe worry me...Oswalt is solid though and Ensberg-Berkman are $$$ but Tavarez, Lane, Wilson, Burke just don't seem like a championship OF to me...Lidge doesn't seem the same since the HR in the playoffs either...(just MHO)

Never said anything about the Cards OF which needs help...but since you made the comment Edmonds-Encarnacion-Taguchi is easily equal to Lan-Tavarez-Burke...but the STL pitching staff is superior to HOU...

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 01/05/06 05:49 PM

Roger is coming back in June. Bank on it. He'll no doubt help our league leading ERA pitching staff. wink

As for the NL Central, I've got nothing but love for my STL peeps. They've always been class for the most part and their knowledge of the game is far superior to that of most casual baseball fan. I respect the history of the Pirates, and the Brewers are a fun up and coming team to watch. The Reds run with the big boys every April/May, then show their 4th place addiction come summer. Not scared.

I only diss the Cubs. Can't stand 'em, never will.

It's a sweep... always has been. Anytime a team wins all the games in a particular series (2 games, 3 games, 5 games or 7 games), it's a sweep. However, the lower number you have, the least amount of importance. I'm not bragging about a 2 game sweep because a) it's just two games and b) there's a lot of baseball left. What I don't get is why ESPN and the media has such a boner for Pujols and nothing about Berkman who's just as good (if not better considering he's a switch hitter).

As bad as you Massholes can be, you still cannot hold a candle to Philly. Those goons booed Santa Claus. I went to Phillies' games for three years while I lived out there. Those people were sub-human. The one cool thing was watching fans at the Vet chuck batteries at JD Drew though. [Laughing] That guy deserves anything he gets in Philly.
Speaking of Philly, I wonder where all those stray cats that lived in the bowels of the Vet went? My dogs would have loved hunting them down before they imploded the stadium.

Why? They're hitting better than last year and look what they did. You have to have pitching to win. Besides, if you knew who was in their farm system, you'd know they'll be just fine with the bats.

...lots of good the farm system has done them so far  ...they will be lucky to be within 15 games of STL at seasons end and lucky to contend for the wild card with the NYM, ATL, PHI, LAD for starters... the HOU offense is so stagnent that Oswalt throws a gem and the bullpen blows it vs Pujols as usual...I wish he would have returned to BOS just to give the media something to alk about all year long besides Bonds...

...decent is the right word to use, ok maybe, average at best even...Lane has had one average year and wilson has had one outstanding year a while back and the rest he competed for the single season strikeout record...as soon as they brought him in I thought it was a huge mistake as he doesn't even bring a gold glove to go with his 150 K's per year and .264 career BA...for the Stro's sake I hope they have something to replace both of them

I didn't understand the Wilson signing at all. The guy brings little to the table. I would have rather taken my chances with Chris Burke (injuries or not) or whatever you claim they have coming out of the farm system.

Yeah I was pretty suprised too...not a fan of Burke myself but Wilson is a bum and hasn't played a full season in a while...wasn't there a few more big names in the OF flyign around before they signed him?

I nearly had a heart attack when there were whispers that the Giants might sign Wilson. There really wasn't much on the market this past year in the way of outfielders. In general, the talent-level seems to be remarkably thin in the outfield of late. On a positive note, Jason Bay is single-handedly keeping my NL-only fantasy team afloat. Now there is an OF I'd like to see in a Giants uniform (hey Barry, don't let that door hit you in the ...) [LOL]

Bay and Pujols are keeping my keeper team out in front by themselves...Bay is one of my favs (crazy canuck laugh )...too bad HOU couldn't have found a solid 1B and kept Berkmen in the OF...rumours that Carlos Lee might be too expensive for the brewers if they keeping dropping out of the race...he would look good in Cardinals Red behind Pujols and Rolen and in front of Edmonds laugh

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 06/07/06 08:25 AM

Who do you think got the biggest All-Star snub?

I think it's a crime that Pudge Rodriguez is starting over Joe Mauer for the AL. I hate legacy selections.

On the NL side, I'm no Nomar fan, but he deserved the selection over Freddy Sanchez. Sanchez is a nice player, but All Star?

The biggest joke is Mark Redman being named to the AL team as the lone Royals representative. Dude has an ERA north of 5.50. This alone is proof that glorified AAA teams have no business getting a cursory slot on the team. In fact, I'm not sure if Redman would make the major league roster of 24 teams.

ETA: Nomar slipped in on the "Last Man" fan vote.

Nick Swisher deserves to be an All-Star.

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 06/07/06 02:16 PM

Pudge shouldn't be there, and Mauer should be staring of course and Ramon Hernendez has had a better year then Pudge I think. Liriano is another...maybe Abreu and Hafner for sure.

Damn the Cardinals blow lately....good thing they got Jeff Weaver to solidify there rotation

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 07/07/06 04:51 AM

Its pretty much no question that Curt Schilling and Mike Mussina were by FAR the biggest snubs.

Schilling 10-3 3.64 109 k's 14 walks, 1.10 whip

Mussina 10-3 3.24 108 k's, 23 walks, 1.04 whip.

These guys, if they continue on like they are, will be right there at the end for the cy young.

Yeah, I have no idea why the Cards picked up that sheep shagger, Hoppy. I would have taken my chances with what they have or someone down on the farm that actually has a future. It's not like every other team in the NL doesn't suck even worse than the Cards.

As far as Liriano ..... Aaagggggh!! I can hardly say his name. Brian Sabean made the second worst trade in MLB history when he sent Joe Nathan, Liriano, and Boof Bonser to the Twins for that assclown AJ Pierzynski. [Crybaby] The only redeeming quality of that trade is that AJ is not on the Giants any more. I don't care if he's an "All Star" with the Sox. Dude is a cancer. We already have our clubhouse cancer quota filled with Barroid.

Yeah, but one cancer has a ring while the other doesn't. I thought a cancer prevented your team from winning it all. confused

No problem. I don't care what team he's on, I was just confused because I thought cancers were labeled that because they caused so much problems with their team that prevented them from winning it all (ie Terrell Owens, Barry Bonds, Randy Moss, Ron Artest, etc)

Oh yeah I agree, Dusty has pretty much crippled the once firery Cards-Cubs rivalry...the Stros-Cards seems to have a respectful hate for each other. Not that they dont like each other, they just hate loosing to the other more then any other team. GO CARDS GO!!!!

Nothing like Playoff atmoshere in mid season! [ThumbsUp]

Garner's got some serious thinking to do for the second half. Everett, Lane and Tavarez just aren't working. They've got two guys pounding the ball in double a... I'm pretty sure they could do a much better job. Lamb, Berkman and Burke are you're only producers. Maybe they'll pick someone up like Tejada. Oh, and Lidge can be the closer, but he should be banned from pitching against the Cards.

This is very true once again....GO CARDS GO....nice to go into the break on a great high and a winning streak after what happened for the last 6 weeks...TSN turning point of the season maybe?

So any predictions for the HR derby anyone? I am picking Lance Berkmen from the left side of the plate......

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 12/07/06 08:40 AM

Well, looks like the Astros took one of my suggestions. They just sent Jason Lane down to Triple A. They also acquired Aubrey Huff:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2517046

Now, what are they going to do with Everett and Ensberg? Hopefully they'll try to pursue Tejada. That would be awesome. [ThumbsUp]
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 12/07/06 10:01 AM

Huff is a nice pickup. I've long thought he wouldn't truly blossom until he played for a contending team.

Can the 'Stros really afford Tejada too? Nismo, I think Huff might be the "big move" for your 'Stros.
Posted by: NismoXse02

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 12/07/06 12:00 PM

Nah, it's still early. I'm sure they're still looking for another bat. If not, they better at least see if Pence and Wood can produce at the big level (maybe give Luke Scott another shot). I don't mind if Ausmus and Everett aren't producing at the plate because their defense is top notched. However, when Ensberg and Lane (who's now demoted) aren't producing, that's just too many non-producers. Berkman, Lamb and Burke can only do so much.

Oh, and the jury's still out on Wilson. He's not hitting homers like he's supposed to, but at least he's hitting for average.

EDIT TO ADD: The Astros managed to make this upgrade ...er strategy --
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 12/07/06 03:23 PM

Tejada stays put in BAL IMHO...and I think Huff will be the "big" aquisition for HOU...hopefully Weaver isn't the "big" aquisition for STL...

This trade was further proof why Chuck Lamar was one of the worst GMs in baseball history. If he had traded Huff in '04 he would have commanded top-flight prospects in return. The Rays are lucky to be rid of Lamar.

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 26/07/06 06:59 AM

MLB Trade Deadline is almost here (ESPN Insider)

The 'Stros really need to get Tejada if they want any shot at the postseason. However, if you remember me saying that they need to bring up 2 of their badass players in the farm system. Well, Hunter Pence is one of those guys, so I don't think they should do that deal. In other words, doesn't look like the 'Stros are going anywhere this year. Hell, doesn't look like the Chisox will either. This would be the first time in a really long time that the World Series teams don't make the post season the following year. eek

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 26/07/06 09:33 AM

Nismo, at least your team didn't give up a future closer (Jeremy Accardo) for that assclown Shea Hillenbrand. What a joke. The Giants need to clean house:

1. Lose Barroid.
2. Fire Brian Sabean. I still cannot fathom Liriano-Nathan-Bonser for AJ Pierzynski. Worst trade since the Red Sox dumped the Babe.
3. Run Felipe Alou out of town.
4. Trade away the geriatric wing on the clubhouse (Alou, Finley, and Vizcaino).
5. Do whatever it takes to get rid of Benitez.

I think the CWS might get in, but it could be close...the Stors are also a long shot but nothgin will suprise me after last year. This year is so ahrd to predict though so you may well be right in both cases...hope so :p

The Cards picking up Belliard was a quiet move, and a good one I think. Sosa could also be a huge help in the bullpen. Hopefully Mulder comes back strong too for the strecth run. As long as they dont play the Cubbies in the playoffs at wrigley they should be ok  ... but they still need a big bat in the OF, was hoping for C Lee from MIL but oh well. GO CARDS GO!!!

The NL is just gross this year. There are only five teams above .500, and two of them (Reds and D-Backs) are only two games over apiece. [ThumbsDown]
My pathetic Giants are only 4 games out of first despite playing like a steaming pile of crap all year. It would be an embarassment to the game of baseball for them to sneak into the playoffs.
The good news: Only 54 more games until Barroid's contract expires.

Lol, I'm counting the 54 games until Bagpipes is off the Astros payroll. That will definitely help.

I listened to Mike and Mike this morning and they're right. No team in the NL would want to see Houston or Florida in the playoffs. Both may be below .500 right now (and still in the WC race [Freak] ), but you get those pitching staffs in a 5-7 games series and they'll be extremely dangerous. The Cards and Mets are definitely rooting for the Reds or DBacks.

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 31/08/06 08:34 AM

The fact that this thread has been dormant for nearly a month during the pennant race is testament to how badly this year has sucked for every fan that doesn't live in New York or root for a team other than the Royals and Indians in the AL Central.

The NL, as a whole, is just plain embarrassing. The season should end after the ALCS is played. It would be the merciful thing to do.

Re: MLB 06 talk... - 31/08/06 10:13 AM

My A's just finished a 21-6 month of august. Things are looking good. And they pulled that off with Street, Crosby and Harden on the DL.

Frank Thomas turned out to be the bargin of the year ($500K plus incentives) and probably will come in runner up in the Viagra comeback player of the year.

That Mark Mulder trade sure did turn out well for us. smile (A's got Dan Haren, Kiko Calero, and Daric Barton. Cards got Agent Mulder who went all mental and seemed to have totally lost his mojo)

Milton Bradley (aka The Gamer) has been the 5-tool player that he always had the potential to be and being away from Jeff Kent has improved his on field attitude too. Just watch him - he's been pretty jovial all season. Playing with Nick Swisher will do that to a guy. Too bad we had to give up Andre Ethier to get him though.

One bright spot for me about this season is that my cousin got a job scouting for the NY Mets. Their bullpen catcher got injured, so he had to fill in for a week or so (he caught in college).

He was able to warm up both Pedro and Glavine.

Let me first say that I, in no way, think the 'Stros are going to pull off the unthinkable for the 3rd straight year. But how freakin' crazy is it that they are now within 2 1/2 games while the Cards magic number is stuck at 5? eek

Only 6 games left!

Stros have Pittsburgh/Atlanta (all away) while the Cards have San Diego/Milwaukee (all home)

4 NL teams, all playing to get their asses handed to them in the World Series. [LOL]

Hey, KJ, what the heck was that last night in Seattle? Oakland trying their hardest to make this dramatic? They don't really want to go to Anaheim with the matter still up the air, do they?

I might have to make a trip to McAfee if they face the Twins in the first round, which seems to be the most likely outcome. Hmmm. Johan Santana vs Barry Zito.

Big bomb from Pujols last night. Otherwise, the 'Stros would only be 1/2 game back. eek This is crazy between the 4 NL teams. I know the NL doesn't mean much this year, but this is fun to watch. Only 4 games left for the Astros while the Cards have 5 (if needed). This weekend has all the making of being exciting. We have Oswalt, Clemens and Pettitte all scheduled to pitch. However, they have to finish the sweep of Pittsburgh today because the Braves appear to be a team you don't want to play right now. The Cards only have to Milwaukee with that last game if needed against a Barry Bondsless Giants.
