Any ideas or interest in a group run in February?
I'm thinking of an over-nighter somewhere, just haven't decided where.

What? No BRT? I am definitely interested. Any where with mud would suit me just fine! J/K I am not too familiar with where you can go in the winter time with the snow and all. What about a coast run or something along those lines?

I've got a trip planned for the week of the 16th. My driving partner and I have been up and down 395 many times but never during winter. My daughter wants to visit my mom, who lives in Carson City, so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. I'll be dropping her off at Grandma's on Sunday the 15th then heading south on 395 first thing Monday morning. Since I have to pick my daughter up to take her home we'll hang a U turn to be back in Carson City may be Thursday or Friday. A couple of days down and a couple back up. We're hoping for a bit more snowfall before then. Interest is mostly photography but if we need to engage to get somewhere, all the better. To stay warmer at night we were planning on hotels instead of campgrounds, besides I don't know how many would be open this time of the year.

Well I'm up for a Feb. weekend trip, maybe, can't be the 14th-15th though.
395 in winter sounds great, I've always wanted to do that, make sure you post some photos. Would be really cool to make it to Bodie in winter if the road's open.
You know me I'm always up for a run to the desert, make it a two nighter and it opens more options. smile

We're doing the desert the 28-29th, I'll post more as I iron out details. We'll be heading back to the same area described in the post "our Jan trip", check the picture forum for pics under "our Jan trip". Anyone interested? 395 ends up near there at the southern end also...

How 'bout a trip to Pismo beach? It's real fun, and there are never problems with snow or mud, but the sand is great fun. I don't even think rain would pose a problem, except for camping, but hey, we can all sleep in our X's!

Anyone interested in Feb. 13-14?

Re: February run - 30/01/04 10:43 AM

I'd do Pismo if we had some other runs as well. Sand is cool, but there is only so much space in Pismo you know. I am open to whatever as long as it is not on the weekend of the 14th and 15th. Later in Feb is better for me.

Pismo Beach is nice, but the only problem is that this time of year it get really windy and cold. I'd recommend this during the spring and summer months. Last time the club went we had someone that knows the dunes very well. I'm planning our first trip around march and april. But, if any of you would like a trip that badly, i can easily find one. Let me know.

Also, A trip to 395 would a be a long drive because tioga pass is closed for the winter. We'd have to go thru monitor pass from reno and drive down. about a 6 hour drive.

Re: February run - 02/02/04 07:46 AM

Monitor is closed for the winter also...it's 89 from 4 to 395..and the entrance to BRT mad
SR 89
[EASTERN SIERRA NEVADA]
IS CLOSED FROM THE JCT OF US 395 (MONO CO) TO THE JCT OF SR 4
/MONITOR PASS/ (ALPINE CO) - WINTER CLOSURE
this from the California road condition page
How about a snow run into Gerle Creek, Wentworth Springs, Eagle Lakes, Summit Lake or Pierce OHV camping area?

Re: February run - 02/02/04 08:35 AM

This time of year you would have to take 80/Donner or 50/Echo and then head south.

You could always start from down south and go north... [Freak]

a run this time of year sounds good to me, but I hate it for the guys that would have to drive that far. they always seem to close Monitor about 50yds away from the trailhead to BRT, bastards smile

Hey Charlie,
Do you have any idea if the Nevada entrance to BRT is snowed in or if the roads are gated getting in that way? Just had a wild curiosity!
Hope to see you on some runs this spring/summer.

Re: February run - 03/02/04 08:17 PM

There might be a way off of Leviathan Mine Rd...but if you take that to the highway you hit a gate a short distance from the trail head. Total hearsay, but I guess the guy who owns the ranch adjacent to BRT doesn't mind people going through his spread, how to do it? I have no idea.

I plan on getting out a lot more this spring and summer. This semester is the killer, but after that it should be smooth sailing smile

Another place I haven't heard brought up is Cow Mountian. The dust will be gone and camping is possible if the weather is cooperative. For most of us it would be the same distance or less than the Tahoe area. I would camp if others were interested.

Snow run sounds good.

Cow Mountain? Were is that at? Are there cows?

Re: February run - 04/02/04 05:45 PM

I will be in Tahoe on the 14th, 15th, and 16th. I will also be there on the 21st and 22nd. If you can give me directions to trail heads to check out, I will do my best. I will be staying near Carnelian Bay at the Norh West corner of the lake. I would love to have an excuse to go X-ploring.

Re: February run - 04/02/04 07:08 PM

We're still headed south to the Mojave area if anyones interested. 28th and 29th, two OHV areas, plus miles of trails outside of the OHV stuff, we had a great time in Jan. Let me know if anyones interested, depending on how many who've said their in actually show, we've got between 3 and 6 vehicles going... the more the merrier...

Re: February run - 04/02/04 08:52 PM

Hey Marty, have you gone up the steep hill that leads to the radio towers at Cow Mountain? That looked like a VERY challenging trail when Ted and I were there 2 yrs ago....and unforgiving if you slide of the left side going up!!!!

Cow mountain might be alot of fun with the dust (powder) settled.

Hey Mick, it's hard to say, because there is 3 or more trails to it. But the one I think you're talking about is very steep. If it's the same one, I have gone down it eek . Scared the hell out of me. The whole way down you get to stare at a memorial at the bottom. And this was before the gear reduction.
