Kids on the Rocks June 24th------>now Sour Grass trip - 28/04/06 03:26 PM

Sorry guys we are no longer doing the kids on the Rocks run, i just can't get any info from the organizer (which makes it hard to plan a trip). I know a number of you guys had planed to do some sort of trip so I have planned something else.

Sour Grass
This trail can easily be done by a stock 4x4 Xterra with a novice driver. There are a few tricky spots that riquire light spotting, but everyone should easily get through fine.

This will be a light wheeling trip with plenty of time at camp so bring your board games and cards. smile

Here's the itinery:

Sat (6/24)
------------------
9am--Pleasanton McDonalds
6800 SANTA RITA RD
PLEASANTON, CA 94588

11am Angels Camp (at Burger King)
290 South Main Street
Angels Camp, CA 95222

11-12pm I'm leaving this hour for time to shop for food for the weekend

We will then drive to the trail and head in, arriving at camp with plenty of time to make camp, have dinner, and hang out at the river.

Sun 6/25
This will be a leasurely day...pack up camp and head out. I'll be leading a side trip for those up for it to Slick Rock trail (to check the snow level and hopfully wheel the trail).

Ummm... This isn't the same as CampWAMP, is it? Do we need to have a certain number of vehicles participate?

Yes, our planned date to help with campWAMP is August 5.

How stock friendly is this trail? I've penciled it in my calendar along with Camp WAMP.

Hmmm. What's the trail like? It has stuff that would barely scare off a Subaru Outback all the way to stuff only for hard-core rock buggies. I think we saw a Volvo XC70 up there, too.

This link shows some pics and the write-up from last year's trip. Anything that's seriously difficult has bypasses. Probably the thing that'll affect how difficult this trail is will be how much the snow has melted by the end of June. Last year, the gate to the trail network was still closed up to just a few hours before the event was scheduled to be held!

At this point, we're not even sure it will happen. We haven't been able to reach the organizer from the Mud Sweat 'n Gears 4x4 club to find out if and when the trail will be open on that date.

Depending on how things look as we approach the date, we'll plan an alternative trip. However, it's not set whether it will be an overnighter yet.

Stay tuned!

We'll have to stop at the Snowshoe Brewery on the way in to fill up the growlers.

Depends if I can get time this week to test drive. The fuel lines got replaced but I didn't get much running time. I also plumbed in a tranny temp gauge so I need to verify that is leak free.

Otherwise I may be only in for a ride along.

I don't even have a front driveshaft yet, it just got sent out to high angle drivelines yesterday for some mods. Plus, my wife is getting back from japan tomorrow so I think I'd be in the dog house if I left her over the weekend.

As for Geoff, you guys might not want to follow him up there, he might dump all his gas all over the road and ignite it. You never know...

Hey, you have a SAS and a rear locker, should be able to make it on SourGrass no problem. smile As for leaking gas, I drive a Jeep, I'm used to that.

This joke was much funnier in person with the hand waving and shocked expression as Steve described Huey seeing a hugh fireball on the road ahead of him.

To bad you all missed that.

One more thing- 9am departure time places us in Angels camp before 11:30am. That leaves enough time to refuel (if necessary) and get some food at the local grocery store.

Looks like 6-8 vehicles, so we should be fine. Also I'm fairly sure it only takes 2 hours to get to angels camp (I've been checking the travel times our last few trips). smile

Yeah, I guess my point was that, with an arrival time of 11:00am and departure time of 12:00 from Burger King in Angels Camp, we're gonna have lots o' spare time to take care of shopping and refueling.
