Sun 5/23--Intro to the Sierras--Sour Grass and Corral Hollow

Sun 5/23--Intro to the Sierras--Sour Grass and Corral Hollow - 12/05/04 10:49 PM

Date change! Now Sunday 5/23

So I'm thinking of doing a begginer's run up HWY4 for Sun, 5/23. This is a stock friendly run with the only requirement being 4x4 only. It's recommended that stock trucks remove their mud flaps and step rails, but not neccessary.

We will be running atleast two trails; Sour Grass http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CA-4/index.shtml and Corral Hollow http://www.californiajeeper.com/corralhollow/review.htm if the snow level is within reason. There are quite a few other fire roads that we can run if there is time.

I'll post meeting spots as soon as I can get an idea of who is comming and from where, but for now I'm thinking of meeting at the Pleasanton McDonalds at 9am and then in Angels Camp by 11:30 or 12.

This will be a great run for those learning to wheel their Xterra and wanting something more than just Hollister. So if you are interested, please sign-up.

BTW, a small group of us went up to scout out the snow levels in the area and it looks like there is still quite a bit of snow above 7k feet. Slick Rock is still snowed in and Deer Valley was only clear on the back portion. It looks like it will be about another month before we can hit the good trails. frown

Here are some pics SLOmatt took enjoy! smile

Re: Sun 5/23--Intro to the Sierras--Sour Grass and Corral Hollow - 18/05/04 03:58 PM

Sourgrass is my club's adopt-a-trail and we were just up there for the opening. Afterwards we headed out to slickrock. Here's some pics from 2 weeks ago: http://www.robinhood4x4.com/gallery/sourgrass_5-8-04

Slickrock is open on the other side (the side witht the stairsteps) and is do-able to the actual slickrock portion. However, the river crossing was pretty high, it barely swallowed 35's.

So, how was Sour Grass? No more snow on the ground at all? Any place covered with too much water for a stock xterra to be able to cross?
Posted by: Robinhood150

Re: Sun 5/23--Intro to the Sierras--Sour Grass and Corral Hollow - 18/05/04 08:37 PM

It's a piece of cake, no snow at all. The water crossing is a little bit deeper than normal, but only up to the hubs if that. It does make finding the larger rocks a bit more challenging to pick the right line to save the diff though.

My 4runner is pretty much stock, just got some armor.

Casper, sorry I don't have any stickers (Dave handles those). If you want some I would say just order them off our website www.nccxterra.com for now. I'll grab some off of Dave next time I see him to distribute.

XTER-RAW, no need to worry about tires for this run if that's what's keeping you from going. My A/T's are fairly warn down now also. The terrain isn't too rough.

Yeah, I'd say they're just about baldies at this point. You know, there's a reason why tires have wear bars on the treads. laugh

I think the only tractive surface left on those tires is the wear bars, they would probably make pretty good drag slicks at this point.

The trip was fun! It was nice meeting you all, and I will be along again! Heck it was so fun, I have the 4x4 bug again and now am going to have to go get another one! wink

I have some pics I will post later tonight, most were not fantastic. I did get a few cool ones though.

Are you guys picky about picture size? Like should I not post huge ones for the dailup guys?

Hey Guys,
Great trip. It was great to finally meet ya'll. Can't wait till the next one.

Josh.

P.S. One of these days I will have to go into detail about my fun drive home on 4. [Uh Oh !] Lets just say it has to do with a HP following me the entire way down 4 and at the end, writing me a ticket for everything I did wrong during that 30+ miles. [Freak] It's one LONG ticket. Oh well, just shows I should by more attention. eek
I wonder if he will show up to court?

Nice meeting everyone. Sorry I had to leave early. Don't want to risk another blow tire eek
Thanks Akio and Huey for the "trail repair".

It was fun trip. The water crossing and wet rocks made for some interesting tires spinnings.

Thanks to 100% replacement warranty, I now have a brand spanking new 31" Scorpion up forsale laugh

Just replaced all 4 with 31" Procomp MT.

Josh the ticket sucks.

I ran into a 4 cars accident on I-205, both lanes closed and had to use the shoulder, 45 minutes to move 3 miles.

Hey All,

It was really good to see some new members join us this time...I hope everyone had a great time.

Corral Hollow & Slickrock still had some snow on the trails, we'll catch them in a month or so.

Camping was relaxing & it was surprisingly warm at night. The steak was "Excellent"...You guys missed a really good, quiet overnighter.

PS: There is a Barney Riley Trail Run, (with camping Saturday & Sunday nights), this weekend...So far Myself & Patrick are attending, but Huey & Xsal said they may be interested in joining us...Check for the post on XOC.

I'll see everyone next weekend... [Wave]

Hey all! This is my first post because im not a xtera owner at all. I have a 2003 TRD 4x4 tacoma. The reason I was posting is because I was on sourgrass this weekend when two cool xtera's pulled up and I saw the owners club stickers on them.

I was wondering if you have pics of your rigs that I could see. Specifically the xtera on 32s with the 4 lights on the front. Thanks guys!

Oh, yea, thanks for the spot. I took your advice and let my girlfriend drive the rest of the way....she scratched the hell out of one side via tree branches  .
