Eagle Peak Trail on Aug. 28 (Sun) - 17/08/05 11:58 AM

Quote:
Quote from Guide to Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive

Date: August 28th (Sun)

Trail: Eagle Peak

Location: Northeast of Sonora, Pinecrest and Strawberry

Difficulty: Moderate. Most of the trail is easy but there are a few steep, rocky hills to climb. Suitable for all high-clearance SUVs with 4WD.

Features: A short and convenient outing to a remote, scenic mountain top. Enjoy hiking, biking and camping along trail and at nearby Pinecrest Lake, home to popular Meadowview and Pinecrest Forest Service Campgrounds.

Time & Distance: Complete loop measures 10.0 miles. Allow 2-3 hours.
Anyone who has been visiting this site looking for a trail to hit with us... This is your chance. smile This is the easiest of "moderate" rated trail in the book I quoted from. An Xterra is a very capable vehicle without any modifications. I have taken a stock Xterra to this trail before (w/ step rails on), and there was absolutely no problem. It does, however, require you to put it in 4Lo. wink

There is a 0.2 miles hike at the end of the trail, which allows you to get to Eagle Peak @ 9,386 ft. and to enjoy great scenary.

This will be a very relaxing trail run...good chance to learn how your 4wd system works, enjoy the fresh air, and meet some new friends. laugh

So, who wants to join?

Akio, since it's an easy one do you think the trail is wide enough for my Titan? I've been wanting to try out the e-locker, but not scratch the truck up just yet on tight trails or take out my step bars.

Re: Eagle Peak Trail on Aug. 28 (Sun) - 17/08/05 01:27 PM

Hmmm...It's hard to say. I've never looked at that trail from a standpoint of full-size truck driver. I do, however, remember seeing a full-size truck in the middle of the trail...before some interesting sections, and being impressed by its presense there. I have also seen a...I wonder what the make was???...it might have been Dodge...an old, lifted, 4wd van at the end of the trail. Of course, it's still not as big as full-size truck, though.

I can tell you that you don't have to take off the step bars, but I can't be sure if a full-size truck can go through w/o scrutches...

Does anyone else remember how tight it might have been? George? Ryan? Sonny? Anyone else?

Re: Eagle Peak Trail on Aug. 28 (Sun) - 17/08/05 02:55 PM

We saw a full size van, and a Explorer at the end of the trail. There were no tight sections that I can remember of.

Actually I do remember a few tight spots in and amoung the trees.......nothing that really was to imposing for the narrow width of the Xterra....but if you take the Titan out there you may want to have someone get out and spot you around those obstacles.

Oh yeah by the way sign me up. I loved this trail last time I went.....great relaxing day run:

Re: Eagle Peak Trail on Aug. 28 (Sun) - 18/08/05 04:38 PM

hey huey, the last time I was on a trail with you guys were some like 5 yrs ago, this was the Pardoe(sp?) trail near Jackson? I was in my 00' Green Crewcab SE.
I bought a boat(anyone up for fishing, let me know) a year later, the boat ended "towing" the Nissan down the boat ramp so I had to trade it in for a V8 Tundra. A couple of summers, I got tired of towing and didn't really tow as much so I got rid of the Tundra.
I will be there on Sunday my Land Rover.

i might be able to make this 1 laugh ... as far as the full size truck... when we ran this last year there was a big ol' ford van at the end of the trail... they just spread grandmas ashes...and were shootin guns in her memory (well maybe not in her memory) . but... there's a good chance you could make it up!

Any corrections? And, any more new people who would like to join? I hate to point it out, but we don't run stock-friendly trails very often. If you're curious about off-roading but don't know much about it, there is no better time to join. You gotta start somewhere... You might as well start from an easy trail... wink

Re: Eagle Peak Trail on Aug. 28 (Sun) - 23/08/05 08:46 PM

Two questions:

1) Is there a camp ground in that general area (w/o having to go down any trails as I don't want to venture on any alone). I noticed something about Pinecrest Lake at the begining of the post.....is that a good camp ground? My girlfriend and I are thinking of camping up there saturday night and then just meeting you guys at the trail head sunday morning.

2) What is the address/location of the trail so I can mapquest it.

thanks

No I don't have a GPS. Is it just outside of a town or something that I can mapquest and then I can wing it from there if you can give the road name that it's on.

I just ran both google and yahoo for the time from Reno to Strawberry; the results were 3.5 hours and 3.75 hours. So, that's not much difference from those of us from South Bay.

If you're new to off-roading, this is probably a very good chance for you to start. I might have said earlier, but it is very unlikely that we'll be running trails easier than this one. Another trail that you can join would be BRT that Gary is organizing. BRT is closer to Reno than Eagle Peak, but would be a lot more intensive to those who are new to the sport. My suggestion for you is to try out Eagle Peak, and get a feel of off-roading, then try out BRT if you'd like.

Here's a map of the trail from the book. Trail Map .

As you can see from the map, it appears to be two campgrounds near Pinecrest Lake.
Quote:
From THE book:
To Get There:
Head east on Hwy. 108. Bear left past the Ranger Station at the Pincrest turnoff. Continue another 3.5 miles to Herring Creek Road and turn right. Reset your odometer. Continue on the road after the pavement ends at 5.4 miles. Just past the "Gargoyles" Nature Trail, turn left at 6.7 miles where a sign points right to Herring Creek Reservoir. The road climbs and gets a bit rougher. Bear right at 8.5 miles where 5N06Y goes left. Turn left at 8.7 miles on 5N74. This starts the 4-wheel-drive route.
We should arrive at the trail head shortly after noon. If you keep your FRS (...assuming you have one or CB) turned on, you should be able to hear us. smile

Re: Eagle Peak Trail on Aug. 28 (Sun) - 24/08/05 12:12 PM

It looks like the "Pinecrest Peak 4x4 Trail" (see map) might be interesting to scout as a future "advanced" run.

Xsal thanks for posting the map that helped out alot. I found a campground up there so short of any unexpected changes we'll meet you guys at the trail head around noon. Excuse the possibly dumb question, but if I have one of the hand held walky-talky radios and I set it to the channel your CB's will be on I should be able to hear you guys right?? Never personally verified by comparing frequencies used by each, but I'm sure that FRS (walky-talky) and CB use different frequencies. Some of us will have both CB and FRS turned on, so I'm sure you'll be heard...or you'll hear us. smile
