Camp WAMP August 6-7 - 23/05/05 01:25 PM

NCCX will be attending this event on August 6-7

Please sign-up below if you think (or would like to attend). We need to be sure that we have enough vehicles to help.

Hi Everyone,

Stephen from Camp WAMP asked me to forward this thank you letter and to let all of us know what’s happening this year. He’s very excited about adding new sessions at other locations and continuing to be able to sponsor all campers through successful fundraising events. What a great guy!

Attn: Jean Miller

Dear Northern California Xterra Club,

It is with sincere gratitude that I thank the Northern California Xterra Club for its four-wheel driving services you provided to Camp WAMP during the month of August, 2004. I appreciate the overwhelming support and dedication you made to the efforts of Camp WAMP at Hawley Lake. You made the experience for the kids we support even better then we had planned.

I’m happy to announce that the help the Northern California Xterra Club provided for Camp WAMP at Hawley Lake was reason the first year was a huge success!!!! The experience really exceeded all expectations and all we had worked for and dreamed about for years. After a couple years of dedication and planning, I was very excited to return to the camp I once attended as a child, but now with my wife, children, friends, staff, and of course, our 24 very special campers you help sponsor this year! I hope to share the magical experiences together with you in the summers to come.

I look forward, with great optimism, to the number of kids we can sponsor through the continued support of the programs Camp WAMP will provide in the future. I hope you think about us as we expand and grow throughout the next several years and know how much you’ve done to have this dream come true for these great, deserving kids.

With my deepest appreciation and thanks,

Steve Wampler

This is such a great camp experience for wheelchair bound youngsters and we were priviledged to participate last year transporting the kids! see my photos at http://www.grovestreet.com/jsp/userview.jsp?username=BlueJ

The dates they need 4WD transportation for the Campers to get to and from Hawley Lake are August 6, 13, 14 and 20. .Jenny Yarrow (Program Coordinator) is in also in charge of coordinating the 4WD transportation this year and she is contacting various 4WD clubs about committing to one day or the middle weekend. Last year thanks to Reno Charlie we tagged on to the Hills Angels group.
How about if we do it again? The camp is in the beautiful Gold Lakes area of the Sierras and we talked about combining this with a Sierra Buttes trek - it’s a wonderful oppurtunity to be of service.

Re: Camp WAMP August 6-7 - 05/06/05 10:55 AM

Jean, I am again interested in making this a club run for NCCX. Do you mind if I put you on point to plan the event (for now we just need someone to work out the dates and specifics with Camp WAMP, I can help later with trail stuff)? The only thing I ask is that we make this a weekend trip so that we can allow for more members to participate.

Thanks!

I'd like to participate as well. Not much room in the X with the car seat but I can make the passenger side available!

Re: Camp WAMP August 6-7 - 14/06/05 04:56 PM

Hi all,

I got a bit more information about this event from Jenny Yarrow, one of the campWAMP directors.

Here are the needs so far:

Saturday, August 6, 2005: Meet at Restroom area in Johnsville right after bridge.
Meeting time: 12:30 pm. Have lunch, load up campers and drive (off-road) to the camp at Hawley Lake. Arrive at camp approx 3:00 and unload.
Transportation needs: 16 campers and 20 staff

Saturday, August 13, 2005: Meet at Hawley Lake camp
Meeting Time: 10:30 – 11:00am. Load campers and gear. Depart towards Johnsville bus pickup to arrive by 1:00 pm.
Transportation needs: 16 campers and approx. 10 staff

Sunday, August 14, 2005: Meet at Restroom area in Johnsville right after bridge.
Meeting time: 12:30 pm. Have lunch, load up campers and drive (off-road) to the camp at Hawley Lake. Arrive at camp approx 3:00 and unload.
Transportation needs: 16 campers and 10 staff

Saturday, August 20, 2005: Meet at Hawley Lake camp
Meeting Time: 10:30 – 11:00am. Load campers and gear. Depart towards Johnsville bus pickup to arrive by 1:00 pm.
Transportation needs: 16 campers and 20 staff plus gear.

Be prepared to transport the kids, their wheelchairs, and their luggage. Adequate vehicle protection is recommended, so wheelchairs or other luggage does not damage paint.

Liability issues are currently being worked on by the camp directors. At the minimum, they will require all drivers to have current licenses, registration, and insurance policies.

Notes about the trail: The trail from the Johnsville bus drop-off point to the camp at Hawley Lake is relatively easy and is completely doable by any stock 4x4 with a low range transfer case. There is just one steep and slippery hillclimb getting out of the camp, but last year nobody had any problems.

I believe that August 6 is a good candidate date, since it allows most of us to get to the pickup point, deliver the kids, and complete our own camping/wheeling adventure and return home Sunday.

The other dates (August 13, 14 and 20) may not work as well for many of us, due to the 4 to 5-hour drive from the bay area to the Johnsville area.

Here\'s the thread from last year\'s trip. We all had a pretty good time.

Re: Camp WAMP August 6-7 - 14/06/05 05:04 PM

We can probably try to run the same trails as we did last year or try some new ones after we deliver the kids to the camp.

Is it ok if we bring a friend that will be in town who is in the Air Force and he will come along with his truck with all of our comping gear, etc which will enable us to take at least 2 if not 3 kids in the Xterra? Also can we bring our dogs?

Yes to both questions, provided that your dogs can be separated from the passengers during transit. Some of the kids may not feel comfortable riding with dogs (but some may) so you should be prepared for either contigency. [ThumbsUp]

I'd like to send an update to the event coordinator about our participation on this.

Here's the list:

3. Huey
4. Casper
5. THEEPOLARBEAR
6. Christi & Ron
7. Jay

10.

Is this list still current?

I printed some trail maps of that region, and it looks like there are some really nice, scenic trails we can try. Our options are:
Gold Valley (easy) <-- this trail actually starts at the campWAMP pickup point
Snake Lake (difficult) <-- ran this last year; definitely not stock-friendly! eek
Sierra Buttes (easy) <-- very scenic; 3/4-mile hike to a lookout along the trail appears to be worth it.

we are still in! but speaking from a stock X point of view, we are not going to be able to do a difficult trail, but we can handle up to a moderate trail with out a problem.

Thanks for the responses.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The camp coordinator will require each driver to show proof of full-coverage insurance and a valid driver's license, so please be sure to have those with you. If you do not meet these requirements, please PM me. Thanks.

I need to know how many passengers each of you can fit. Last year I was able to squeeze 3 kids in the rear seat, since all my camping gear was moved to the rear cargo area.

Please edit or correct this list (but only if it's inaccurate):

That depends on whether the suburban is stock or lifted with larger tires. The long wheelbase will make it harder for a stock suburban to prevent scraping bottom on some of the stuff, but it should be OK if the driver is experienced.

Very experienced off-roading and 35 in tires, 4 in lift!

UPDATE

I spoke to Jenny Yarrow (camp director) and she would like us to be at the staging area at NOON, and aim for leaving for the camp at 1pm.

She also said that there will be someone with a trailer to take wheelchairs.

Yikes! That means we'll have to leave mighty early! We'll have to meet at the old Montgomery Wards Parking Lot (Monument Blvd/I680) in Pleasant Hill at 7:30! It's a solid 4-hour drive from Pleasant Hill to the Plumas-Eureka State Park. We'll need some time to refuel in Truckee.

Re: Camp WAMP August 6-7 - 27/07/05 12:11 AM

is it possible to work out a meeting time and place in truckee or what ever is closest to reno? reason being...i will be in the truckee area (family gathering) on the 4th & reno (hot august nights) on the 5th. i no longer have a cell phone, which is why i'm trying to set this up now... anywho... if anyone is free on the 5th to hit H.A.N. with me ... by all means contact me. thank you in advance!
[e.t.a.] i don't have a room for the night of the 5th i was just gonna rough it or sleep in the truck.

Gawd, I hope so! They have had 3 of their top guys on it, and none of them can figure out what the problem is. [Freak] [Uh Oh !] [Huh?] They even tried swapping out the ECM to see if that solved the problem! (It didn't.)

Anyone have a suggestion on a meeting place for the more northern people, Mc Donalds on Forest hill ok with everyone.

Dean when do you think you guys will be coming through that area???

Maybe you can call us on the radio when your approaching forest hill and then we can just merge in behind you guys...

Re: Camp WAMP August 6-7 - 29/07/05 12:31 AM

It looks like about a 2 hours' drive from Pleasant Hill (Willow Pass/I-680) to the Foresthill exit on I-80, so I'd guess about 9:00 to 9:15 is our "passing through" window.

Ultimately we should all regroup in Truckee at 10:30am, top off the fuel tanks and head up as a group.

Let's all plan to meet up (with FULL gas tanks) at the Safeway Shopping Center in Truckee at 10:30am, targeting to leave no later than 10:45. It's about an hour and a quarter drive to the State Park in Johnsville.

Yeah lets use the typical FRS 8 and those that have CB option can use that as well...

I will be meeting you guys(and girls) in Truckee. No CB but have an FRS.

Saw a post from Akio over on muddyoval.com about this and I'd like to help out.

I can take three people in my Discovery II.

And camping doesn't sound bad, either, if you folks would let me tag along.

Welcome! Thanks for helping us out! We'd love to have you come join us.

Does "newbie Rover guy" mean you're a Rover guy who's a newbie to XOC, or a guy who's a newbie to Rovers? smile :p

Akio- thanks for spreading the word!

"...Does "newbie Rover guy" mean you're a Rover guy who's a newbie to XOC, or a guy who's a newbie to Rovers?..."

Ah, that is kind of unclear :p .

I'm new to this board and have had my Rover for about 9 months.

Thanks for the welcome!

Also, do we need more trucks? I'm on two other Rover norcal boards and could probably scare up a few more trucks, short notice and all.

I got a message from the camp director, and she thinks we're gonna have enough vehicles to cover their transportation requirements. So, I think we're good to go!

Here are GPS coordinates and maps for this weekend. The info below is merely for your reference, if you'd like to plug in the data into your GPS unit. I will pass out printed handouts with the maps, trail description, etc. in Truckee.

Gold Valley Map (Saturday's trail run)

Gold Valley GPS Waypoints (GPS Datum: NAD27CONUS)
#_Mileage____Latitude___Longitude
1____0.0___39 37 10.7___120 39 59.0
2____1.5___39 37 58.3___120 40 41.8
3____3.7___39 39 01.7___120 41 07.8
4____5.3___39 39 11.5___120 42 25.3
5____7.6___39 40 38.1___120 41 56.6
6___10.7___39 42 23.4___120 42 58.4
7___13.1___39 42 55.8___120 44 38.5
8___12.9___39 46 18.0___120 37 09.2

*We will run this trail from north to south, which is in reverse order of the waypoints. CampWAMP is held at Hawley Lake on the map.

Sierra Buttes Map (Sunday's trail run)

Sierra Buttes GPS Waypoints (GPS Datum: NAD27CONUS)
#_Mileage____Latitude___Longitude
1____0.0___39 33 56.6___120 38 4.7
2____2.5___39 34 33.8___120 39 36.7
3____4.8___39 35 03.6___120 40 23.7
4____5.2___39 25 16.6___120 40 1.4
5____1.2___39 35 43.0___120 39 11.2
6____2.7___39 36 51.8___120 39 56.2
7____3.1___39 37 10.7___120 39 59.0

Also, we'll be camping somewhere along the trail or near Packer Saddle (refer to Gold Valley map). It's possible that the camping location may not have water or toilets, so be prepared. I'll be bringing my PETT portable toilet just in case.

***Note: You may be asked to transport wheelchairs or other gear, possibly on your roof. If you care about your paint, bring an old blanket, towels, etc. to prevent scratches.
