Thanksgiving in Death Valley - 26/08/06 04:54 PM

Once again it is time for a return to the Mojave Desert in search of new places, old favorites and old friends. Tenatively we are looking at meeting Saturday night, 11/18 on the trail to Chloride City, off HWY 374, near Beatty Nevada. The concept this time focuses on a camp on the trail event, starting at the Nevada border, and ending at the Nevada border. A horseshoe loop if you will. Gone is the prior trip practice of base camp. Additionally a midway meet up for Thanksgiving will be offered. Trails will be easy to moderate, due to ajenda, nature of Death Valley Trails and a switch to the Xterra as my new trail rig. No equipment requirements this trip except supplys and additional fuel, atleast 2 Jerry cans+. Come prepared for major snow, bring shovels. Generaly mild temperatures at camping locations.

Saturday 11/18: Meet at night at camp on Chloride City trail.
Sunday 11/19: Run Chloride City Trail, Run Cottonwood and Marble Canyon Trails. great views and scenery. Camp???
***Supply Point, Last without commute to Trona!!!!!!!!!!
Monday 11/20: Cerrro Gordo Ghost Town Trail and start Race track Trail. Camp along trail.
Tuesday 11/21: Visit Racetrack(moving rocks), camp Saline Valley Hot Springs.
Wednesday 11/22: Run Pleasent Canyon over to South Park Canyon, stay at Briggs Cabin. Hot showers, oven, beds, ect. No charge.
****Need someone to bring BULK propane tank!
****Fuel only MIGHT be available
Thursday 11/23: Rest day, people may meet up for a short, second half trip. Cook Thanksgiving pot luck dinner in cabin, hike to local mines.
Friday 11/24:
Ghoeler Wash, visit Manson Ranch and other sites, camp at Russels Camp.
******This cabin needs a small generator to run!
Saturday 11/25: Finish Ghoeler Wash, run Echo Pass back into Nevada. Head home Saturday night or Sunday AM early.

This trip sounds like fun.

I don't have an aftermarket rear bumper. Can I safely carry 2 jerry cans inside my Xterra? I never had a fuel jerry can before.

Yes, but......
You really should use NATO, German style Jerry cans. They do not leak fumes at all. I had FOUR in my rig in Baja.( and wished I had 5)

Lloyd,

Where can you purchase a NATO German style jerry can? Army surplus stores? Any online stores that you know about?

They have been hard to get ahold of. Kragens/ Checkers did carry them. The last ones I got were from Generator Joes online. Only to find out my local 4x4 shop had them for the same price without the expensive shipping mad
