Hell Hole Trail on October 23rd & 24th - 28/09/04 11:22 PM

Quote:
From Guide to Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails
Trail: Hell Hole
Location: Northeast of Auburn and Foresthill, west of Lake Tahoe
Difficulty: Difficult. Narrow and steep with challenging rock ledges. Not for stock vehicles. High ground clearance, large tires and at least one locker recommended. help is a long way off. Don't go alone.
Features: A long drive to a short, but terrific hardcore trail. Ends at a very secluded spot along the shores of little-used, but very impressive, Hell Hole Reservoir. Makes a great weekend trip if you camp overnight and fish. Take bug repellent in the summer.
Time & Distance: Trail is only 4.0 miles long. Allow 1 to 2 hours each way depending upon vehicle capability.
Return Trip: Return the way you came.
Date: October 23rd & 24th.
Elevation: Approx. 4,900 ft.

Sorry, Ruger1022... I don't mean to start some sort of competition, but this was the only weekend I could plan for a camping trip...

As you all asked, the choice of the trail for October camping trip is Hell Hole. This trail is rated a bit more difficult than Deer Valley trail [Uh Oh !] , and obviously requires larger tires, suspension lift, etc. If you have driven though Deer Valley w/ only larger tires, and if you're comfortable, join the trip at your risk. wink

I chose this trail as a camping trip because of the time & distance to the trail...plus the hours of day light. I'm not quite sure when we should be attempting the trail...

October 23rd (Sat)
9 am at McDonald's at Santa Rita Exit off of I-580
11:30 am at Safeway in Rocklin for lunch & grocery shopping
12:30 am in Foresthill
13:30 near Hell Hole reservoir

Who's up for it?

Well, a stock X might be able to make it, but you'll have to be ready for high possibility of body damages. [Uh Oh !]

It is Plesanton at this point. It could be Pleasant Hill since we're going through Sacramento, anyway...

mad The one trip that's in my backyard and it's my boy's b-day on the 23rd. I've never ran that trail, but from what I've heard a stock X would probably get some damage... it's not for the faint of heart. You guy's have fun [ThumbsUp]

Might I suggest the robbers roost resturaunt at 23990 Foresthill Rd. It's right on the corner of Foresthill road and Mosquito ridge road, which is the road you take to get to hell hole.

Mike...Depending upon how crazy we are, we might run this trail twice...Sat. & Sun. eek Or, We might not try much on Sat., and run the whole trail on Sunday. I'm not sure how this exactly run schedule will be like. If we decide to run the trail on Sunday and as long as someone's cell phone works in the area, we can let you know that Saturday evening. You might still have a hope...

And, thanks for the meeting place suggestion in Foresthill. That sounds like a good meeting place. [ThumbsUp]

Hey...thought you Hell Hole trip guys might be interested in this. A local 4x4 club I go out with every now and again did a trip to Hell Hole Reservoir earlier this month...here is a link to their photos:

http://www.capitalcitygoat.org/extra04Rigs1.htm

This trail happens to be their trail in the "adopt a trail" program

Have fun my stocker is NOT going on this one. lol laugh

Thanks for posting that link... Yea, it does look like Deer Valley +1 difficulty, but doesn't look like something that modifed Xterra cannot handle. It'll be challenging and FUN! laugh

Re: Hell Hole Trail on October 23rd & 24th - 01/10/04 02:28 PM

No your right a modified X should be able to handle this trail (lift, tires, locker and or winch and an easy going attitude, rock sliders). Which I was set up to go but since I am not will have to live through you guys. laugh

Assuming that you're coming from I-80 all the way until Colfax area and we'll be stopping in Rocklin area for lunch, I'll give you a call once we get to the middle of Sacramento area. Then, you can leave home. laugh That should get us all to Foresthill area about 12:30 pm.

Or, we can shift the entire schedule to...get up early, and get there early. It's all up to you all. [Wave]

By the way, I just heard on the radio... Somewhere on Hwy4 is closed due to snow? [Uh Oh !]

Re: Hell Hole Trail on October 23rd & 24th - 19/10/04 11:23 AM

Looks like roads over the Sierra passes are getting their first closure of the year. Hwy120 and Hwy4 are closed due to snow. If the snow doesn't melt off before the next storm, the roads will be closed for the season.

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/hi.htm

I suppose this trip may be tentatively cancelled due to poor weather? Or are y'all looking forward to camping in the rain?

Re: Hell Hole Trail on October 23rd & 24th - 19/10/04 08:35 PM

I have been checking the weather.com in Foresthill... I haven't exactly decided if it should be cancelled, yet.

I think George and Jose will be sleeping in their truck. I'm trying to figure out how we can both sleep in a car and not getting my stuff that is moved to outside wet... (I don't like the idea that the entire tent is wet when we have to put it away...) Andy will be sleeping in a tent, but I have a feeling that he don't mind about rainy wet tent as much as I do...

There is some possiblity that Saturday might not be that bad. So...

Option 1:
Leave early, and complete the trail run on Sat. wink Camp Saturday night. Just pack and come home on Sunday whenever... In this case,...Everyone brings as many tarps as you have!

Option 2:
Cancel this weekend, and hope for the weekend after (Oct. 30-31), which might not be as good for some people since it's a Halloween weekend. [Uh Oh !] And, who knows what will happen to the weather... [Freak]

Hey Akio,

I have a couple of excellent tarps on hand, & a couple tent poles, & some bungies. Maybe we can work our tarps together to protect our goods, that is,if we are all sleeping in our rigs...If it rains [Smoking]

I vote for the following:

Well, I hate to say it, but I have to work now. All this wonderfull weather (read very sarcastic) has pushed up my time table at work. Looks like I won't be getting a day off for the next three weeks. This was going to be my last weekend to go wheelin before the winter hit. Now it looks like I will have to wait until next summer. [Crybaby]
If things change I may try to make it, but I don't see that happening. Sorry guys. Have fun and do some wheelin for me.

What I mean by that is:
1. Fallen VERY large tree blocking the trail
2. an OHV trail nearby became motorcycle trail from jeep trail w/o any kind of sign (too narrow for trucks)
3. Big yellow metal gate just before the highway
4. Huge piles of dirt to prevent from reaching the highway
5. A traffic accident on the highway

...I wonder if I missed any..???

Well, didn't get to cut the firewood much at all. It was too dense for sawzall... I gave up on it like 10 min. after I started. Oh, boy... We NEEDED camp fire... [Too much XOC] We found a camp ground near a reservior w/ no one else. Put up multiple tarps in the rain... Temperature about 30+ degrees. I can't imagine what would have happened to us if we didn't have any heat/dry firewood. [Argue] We did sleep in our trucks comfortably, though. Truck's heater is good. [Sleep]

If I have to do this again, it'll be better for me... I'll know what to do little better. wink
