Potential spare parts anyone?

Potential spare parts anyone? - 13/03/03 10:39 PM

After nearly 4 weeks of attempted repair, I received the phone call this morning that my X is probably going to be totaled. I was broadsided about 5 weeks ago by a 16 year-old kid in a BMW. Anyways, there is likely to be one peach of a salvage vehicle in the San Diego area (only body/frame damage on the driver's side and a broken front axle/left front end). I'll keep those of you looking for parts updated as I find out more in the coming days. I just hope I can get another X after everything settles out!

FYI - When they totalled my X they (the insurance company) kept everything and sold what they could to recoup their loss. All I got was the payoff (minus the deductable). And was not allowed to part it out.

That is correct. Your insurance company is paying you for the estimated cash value of your vehicle prior to the loss. Therefore, you are paid in full and they own the salvage. By law, they are only required to pay you for your value less salvage value - but most people could give to dookies about their salvage or would not know what to do with it. So, originally as courtesy and now as a common practice, they pay you the full value and dispose of the salvage themselves. Check out your policy - most actually say actual cash value less salvage value. Another problem is that it is very hard to determine salvage value until bids are made.

Ok, class is over...sorry about that meant to put a quick blurb and it turned into this. In short, you can't touch any of the parts of your vehicle once totalled.

I'm fully aware of this. All I was saying is that there's likely going to be a very good 4X4 Xterra salvage at a yard down here in San Diego, in case anyone might be looking for stuff. It was never my intention to 'part it out'.

It's in insurance company storage while we settle, but I'll try and find out where it goes to after. I'd imagine it will end up somewhere down here unless somebody buys the whole thing, which, given the condition is entirely possible.

I appreciate it....I found a tank in Bakersfield but id rather cruise down to San Diego since my girlfriend lives in PB, it'll be a 2 for 1 trip!
