Re-Order the search options?

Re-Order the search options? - 06/02/06 07:21 PM

Would it be a big deal to re-order the search categories/forum sections so that they perhaps match the order they appear on the board top to bottom, or alphabetically, or something?

laugh

When you pull down the options..there's no rhyme or reason to them....

and

The ones we want to search the most (Newbies) are the LEAST likely to figure it out/not give up.

Whoa! I was going to post the same sugestion. When you search, you have to manualy search for the forum. It wouldnt be so hard since they are out of order because usually on drop down lists you can type the first letter of the field you want but when you have this : >> infront of everything you cant do that either.

Thanks TJ

I will look into that.

Good suggestion

Ok.. here is the problem I see.

The board arranges the search order by the creation of each forum.

So unless I can find a workaround that does not include deleting all the forums and rebuilding the site we may be stuck with it the way it is.

[Freak]

I have no idea what that means.

Can a subtle change in the forum name...like re-naming a forum, rather than deleting it....be performed?...in the approriate order of "Creation"?

Like space space name...?

Any other work arounds/band-aids?

We can program rockets that can hit asteroids...surely we must be able to program a board to present the search categories as we like.

Is there a way to search the entire forum? A lot of times a question is asked and answered in a forum that it doesn't necessarily belong in. Also, as was mentioned above a newbie may not know what forum to begin searching in. A search of the entire site may spit out a lot of different results, but would be better than having to search each separate forum individually.

ironically, you should search for that answer, I think it's been covered numerous times.

Something to the effect of sluggin' down the server for a few seconds by having to search every forum/post available.

Argh - I wish Ian hadn't given up on switching to vBulletin frown

This has been suggested at least once every 4 months for the past several years. The basic conclusion is the same each time.....

Ian/Carlton doesn't have enough time to re-write the code to make everyone happy. So... their time > our happyness.

If anyone wants to volunteer to invest the hours needed to re-write and troubleshoot the code - I am sure Carlton wouldn't object to making the change.

Funny, I did a search before suggesting it, and it didn't come up.

You could always just search from inside each section.

For example, if you wanted to search for something in General, just go into General and click the search button from there. It will automatically be set to search in General for you.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the question? I'm assuming you want all the sections on the universal search to be reordered in the way they are laid out on the main page?

seems to be the most logical way of searching.

How about a Google global search intergrated into the site?

That would solve everyone's problem

oooh, thinking outside the box!

isn't there a way to go to google's main page and do a search specific to a site? I dunno if it catalogs forums that actively though.

Yup. If I were searching for headlights, I could type the following into google:

Quote:
headlights site:xterraownersclub.com
site: restricts it to the domain specified

I thought it was the other syntax:

Code:
site:xterraownersclub.com headlights
But either one works.

Sounds like a sticky issue.

The site's search feature is very clunky and discourages use...if we just make sure that the google option is available as back-up, or as the starting point, I think it would help everyone.
