'01 Xterra Weird shudder - 16/03/05 08:09 AM

My husband and I were cruising down the freeway and opened our Xterra up to about 90 mph. At around 90 - 95 mph we experienced a strange shudder, almost like we hit a bump or rut in the road. The road is fairly new and flat. We repeated the speed and it did the same thing. Has anyone had this happen? If so what is it? It freaked us out because we have had the X for about a month and have had no problems other than a pulling on the right side. We can't figure that out either. Help!!

90-95 MPH?

Oh that shudder. That was God trying to tell you you're an idiot for going that fast in an SUV.

Its a resonance issue, the vibrations augment each other at that speed on your X.

If you go up to 110 mph, the vibration goes away.

And, you have a governer on the speedo that kicks in about then, limiting the mph you can go, as the tires are not rated to go that fast, and Nissan hates if people blow their tires out, roll over a few times, and then sue them, etc.

Its equally as crazy to hang you SUV over a cliff offroading as it is to drive to fast down a freeway. What's the difference? You can roll just as many times either way. To those that offered useful advice, thank you. I appreciate the input. By the way, does anyone have a fire extinguisher, so I can put out the flames!

1. Most off-roaders prob'ly don't "hang" their SUV over a cliff. They follow trails.

2. If you do roll your Xterra when you're offroading, you're prob'ly not moving at 90+ mph.
A slow roll is bad for the truck, but is easy enough to walk away from.
A roll at high-speed? See you on ogrish.com . . .
