Newbie xterra q&a - 30/06/03 11:04 AM

I just bought a 2000 xterra 4x4 xe. I was wondering how I can tell what tranny and engine I have. I have read the tag on the inside door panel and it says the trans is: RE4R01A and the engine had two sets of numbers: 6VG5DE and 3275CC.

The axle says HG46 - that translates to good or bad? LSD or not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a 4X4, so it has to be the 3.3 V-6.
HG46 means it's the 4.636 axle, which means it has the Sport Package, which means it has the LSD.

RE4R01A means it is a Remote-shift, Electronically-controlled, 4-forward-speed, Rear-drive transmission, model 01, version A unit.
The engine number is just its serial number.

Errr...not necessarily...I have 4.636 axle with no LSD (See the "2002 vs 2001 Rear Axle" thread a few threads down from here).
I don't think the asserted "HG46 -> 4.636 -> Sport package -> LSD" series of implications is exactly true.
I think you need to look for an orange sticker on the diff cover that say "LSD oil only" or something like that.

Right. At least back in 2000, the 265/70R15 tires that brought the 4.636 gears along were not part of the Sport package, they were part of the Utility Package. The base 235/75R15s were the ones that had the 4.363 gears.
