I was under the impression that the exhaust (or some portion of) was made of stainless steel.

Speak to the parts manager, not just the counter man. If they have a firm order (with deposit) they should bend on the price. IIRC the markup on that part is about 30%. If they are not willing to do 15% or better, try a different dealer. Bring a copy of some of the posts that confirm that other dealers are discounting the part - just in case they say "no one does that".
