My Tachometer shows 2700 RPM's at highway speeds, I have the auto tranny. My other car is a Mustang with a larger engine, but it shows 1700 RPM's at the same speed. Is something wrong with the Xterra?

I'd check the phitzer valve. Or the blinker fluid.
