06 6spd Gas Mileage

I have an 06 6spd with about 1500 on the clock.
The gas mileage has yet to even hit 16 mpg. Anybody with an 05/06 getting about the same??? I was hoping for slightly better mileage. The sticker claims 17/21 but I haven't seen anywhere near that as yet. I try to keep my right foot out of it but it's soooo hard to do. I have managed to keep it below 3500 rpm when shifting.
So whats everyone else getting for mileage?

I'm driving the pervious gen X (which is slower and has less power than new ones) and I even manage to keep RPMs to 2500 and only 3000 if I need to pass.

RPSs are the key, my friend. The new X has MORE than enough power below 3000 RPM.

All the automotive forums complain about winter blend fuel and a loss in MPG.

Also - we have found a real strong relationship between the way you drive and the mpg you get.

If I go with the flow, and cruise along without trying to rush, beat people out, or otherwise speed up/slow down more than necessary...I get an average of 22-26 mpg.

If I use the cruise control on hilly terrain, I get worse mileage, as it tries to up the rpm to maintain speed up hill...if I let it slow up up hill, and naturally speed up on the down hill...I get better mpg.

If I am on a bombing run from South Jersey to New Haven CT and back, I might drop that to 14-16 mpg....as I'm going faster, and I'm trying to beat the traffic patterns...If I do the same run at a relaxed pace, it takes an extra 2-4 hrs, and saves me about$25 in gas money.



(Bombing run = there and back ASAP, not a terrorist operation...)

If I think of the difference in time -vs- the difference in money, and figure out how much an hour I paid to get back faster, its not as painful.



So - driving style can get you several mpg back.

I would give your engine time to get broke in. 1500 miles is to early to panic, I would expect a true reading closer to 5000 miles or so. This will give the rings time to seat and the motor to loosen up. This and following the posts above will also help a great deal.

Ya I figure the engine needs more break in time also. I haven't checked this weeks mileage yet as I just filled up tonight on the way home. I am averaging 260 miles per tank. I had an 02 4 cyl and was actually averaging about 270 miles per tank. The 02 had a 14.3 gallon tank, I thought. This one has a 21 gallon tank. My 02 was also a 4x2 not a 4x4 so I figure the 4x4 is carrying around an extra 400+ lbs of transfer case and such. Time will tell.

don't assume that just because you shift at a low RPM your gonna get better milage, i realize the 05+ has much more power than mine, IMO your better off shifting a little higher in the revs if you want speed and then upshift, rather than shifting at around 2000rpm and then mashing the gas and not moving\have the engine struggle, i usually shift around 2500-3000rpm depending on traffic and i shift into overdrive ASAP

It's also not just about the RPM that you shift at because what REALLY matters is how far down you push your foot to get to that RPM (i.e. opening up the throttle all the way) The computer dumps alot more fuel into the mixture when it sees a wide open throttle(floored gas pedal) and thus great airflow than partial throttle. :p

Yeah - driving the load, not the speed, is important...bogging the engine with the pedal floored, to maintain an rpm up a hill, etc...saves nothing.

jeez, man. I have an 05 4x4 S MT, about 13,000 miles on it, and I get over 300 miles on a tank with city driving. I drove from San Antonio, Tx to eastern Oklahoma on one tank of gas...I dont' know how many miles that is, but I think it's over 400. I really make an effort to keep the rpms below 2500 (2000 if possible), and throw it into neutral when ever possible. It helps a lot...at least gas prices are going down here...under $2.00 now! weeeee!

I have an '06 2wd with a 4.0L 6sp. We have about 2k miles and are getting 22mpg in mixed hwy/city. I try to run around at 2,000rpm and shift at conservative Rs. But I tell you what that 4.0L will run when asked! Also; I just got rid of a GM that never had anything but synthetic oil and never lost a drop between changes from burning and never developed a drip in 130,000 miles.
What do you think? Stay with the Syn. oil?
I think I will be going with the K&N air filter and a Flowmaster after the new has warn off.

So that's why you guys do it, (slow down traffic up hills) for the sake of fuel economy! I always thought it was to aggravate everyone else or because the driver was too retarded to add a little pedal pressure to keep the same speed.

WOW, 22 to 26 mpg? I am a very conservative driver and I dont come close to 26 mpg. Not even with a tail wind. My X has never seen over 3000 rpm. I have about 23k on the odo.

I have an 05 6 speed with almost 12,000 miles an d i get decent when i want to, just keep the rpms down at the start and dont raise them above 2 grand just dont bog the motor down and run around town in 4th gear at 25 mph that wont save you any gas at all just try to keep the rpms steady and shift around 2 grand it seems to work for me.

theres no way you can get 26 mpg TJ. sorry, I just don't believe you.

It all depends on how I drive. I really don't care to much abaout it cuz it's the way it is.

I drive from Burlington,VT to Union,NJ and I make it on a full tank. It's like 320 miles. But the again I have also needed to fill up before 287.

Depends on how you drive and of course having 4 Hella up top holding the wind doesn't help.
