Big one coming to Colorado, hold on- - 20/12/06 10:42 AM

Looks like some serious dumpage. Hope you boarders and skiers have a killer weekend of fresh. We are off to a slow season. But colder than a H3 owners tit.

In Boulder we have gotten about 8-10 inches in just the past 3 hours.

The snow is even picking up and snowing harder too!

One of these days you're going to hear a knock at your door, you'll open the door and see your Xterra painted pink, the front axle cut up into little pieces and one of those herds of elk you always just have to post pictures of pureed and dumped all over the inside of your X! :p

just sent all people with two wheel drive home, and they have to dig out from the drifts behind their cars. I have a feeling that the short bus will live up to it's name getting people home tonight.

Re: Big one coming to Colorado, hold on- - 20/12/06 02:15 PM

The snow is falling faster than the plows can remove it.

There is now a 4-5' median on every street. There is absolutely no chance of turning left onto any side street. I've seen many cars try and just stop dead in their tracks.

The awesome part is, it keeps snowing HARDER!!!

laugh

On a side note, my new tires are doing wonderfully in the snow. I have already received many phone calls from friends asking if I can be their tow truck if needed. Hopefully, my services will be needed. laugh

Might want to make sure you can keep your hotel room for an extra day. DIA is closed. Maybe until after noon tommorrow if the snow lets up. They have planes stuck in the snow that were taxiing to the gates.

I have heard, fortunately, but my hotel is downtown and nowhere near the airport. I've already had to re-schedule my flight home once (due to a UPS snafu) and the travel agent we use said if I my flight to Denver gets cancelled tomorrow, I'm well and truly hosed until after Christmas. Should that happen, then I'm getting a flight to KC (where we're supposed to spend Christmas) instead, and the wife will drive out and meet me.

Just lovely down, The Darwin Awards will be tough choice afterwards...
Took an hour to go 4 miles on I25 coming home from work (work truck 4x4 Silverado) off ramp a mess, main road a mess, so hopped around everyone and dove down a side street: piece of cake.
Wife had the X out and was really impressed: first big snow for the X and she's real happy how well it manuevered around all the stuck cars.

Welp, we're frackt. Delta cancelled our flight into Denver, next available flight (according to them) is the 25th. Considering our return date was supposed to be the 27th, not much sense in going now.

Try it in DC. People flip out when it sprinkles rain, let alone snow.

It's such a transient area, few people seem to be used to it. A 1" snowfall sends them into a panic. A threat of snow closes the schools.

Traffic is bad enough here on a clear sunny day.

My original flight is gone and cancelled.
Try calling United, get to the point where I should be in a queue for a cust service rep, I get booted to a busy signal and hung up on.
The flight is/was operated by Air Canada, so I call them. No problem inside of 2 minutes I have a customer service rep who actually provides service! So, I fly to Toronto at noon local time tomorrow...have a layover till 5:00-ish to get home to Denver. If that flight is cancelled, I have a flight to KC from Toronto that leaves @ 4 so I'm good. Or I can try to fly to Denver on Friday morning laugh
I will never fly United again, so long as I have a choice...total lack of customer service...but I knew that already laugh

Re: Big one coming to Colorado, hold on- - 21/12/06 09:29 AM

Well, the last blizzard we had, I was able to romp through drifts as high as the headlights...and go over the one's taller than the truck...and drive circles around stuck trucks in about 2' - 3' or so.

A lot depends on the quality of the snow, and if you can compress it with your treads to get a bite...or if it walls up in front of you, or ramps up the frame to high center you, etc.

(Powder is the most fun)

So far, with the AT ko's, the X has been unstoppable...I've seen Interco TrXus do amazing as well....etc.

Kevin, the DEN being closed is one thing, but I just worked my tail off to get 15 miles-in-trail for a ton of Aspen and Eagle arrivals, stepping them down around a bunch of overflights. The normal traffic waves to and from DEN are pretty much gone until tomorrow, then we'll be playing catch-up.

Getting to work wasn't too bad, I stopped to help a stuck Grand Cherokee and F150 trying to get on the diagonal at Niwot.

Here are some pictures from Boulder, CO. We got a total of about 16". The roads are fun to drive in. No left turns for any other cars.

I rescued 8 vehicles who were high centered, including a huge lifted truck.

I was plowing through 3-4' snow plow berms with no problems what-so-ever. My new tires were incredible. And the lift sure helped out my ground clearance as well.

Man, spent last night and most of today digging over 30 vehicles out of being stuck (made a couple of $ too!). Also played taxi for the hospital and went and got a couple of nurses so they could get to work.

Chains and 4 wheel drive in this stuff is great! I cleared out alleys, went everywhere I wanted to go and had a blast doing it. Now I get to take the wife to work again tomorrow and then go to work myself. Ah well, had to end the fun sometime. laugh

I think it's horrible for someone to ask for money for pulling you out... and I think it's even more horrible for someone who got pulled out not to offer some.

(i.e. money ought to change hands or the guy who got rescued is an a$$ - but it should be a thank-you and not an extortion)

AZ has a "stupid driver" law now whereas a person who's driven into a raging wash during a monsoon storm (or any other time) and is extracated by means of the city/state, must pay (and through the nose) for services rendered. I'd spent many a summer night pulling idiots from washes in my youth.. Supplemented my teen-years income quite well over the summer months as I recall. smile

Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't doing it for money, I was doing it to keep from being bored off my ass while my wife was in the store. However as you stated they could of at least offered a few bucks. I know I always did when I needed to be pulled out of somewhere.

Come to think of it the ONLY time I ever said I'd pull someone out for money was when they were offroading in an off limits area at an OHV park and snapped both axles on daddys bronco. The ranger was standing right there when they came walking out asking for help. Told them I'd tow them back to the staging area for $20. When we got there the ranger promptly gave them a $100 fine for offroading in an off limits area and on top of it they had to get a flat bed tow about 80 miles to home. [Laughing]

Re: Big one coming to Colorado, hold on- - 22/12/06 07:58 AM

I agree at least offer a couple of bucks, just out of courtesy. Its rare I take the money unless they are somewhere they are not supposed to be in a vehicle that has no business being there.

Once I got $50 for pulling a guy out of a 3' drift for 50 ft with the winch. His minivan had no business being there. Edited - He offered the money to start and after seeing how bad he was stuck and 2 hours of work I did take it.

Wonder where Knight in Armor is.... I know just a few miles from his house the got over 4' of snow he should have some cool pics!!!

Re: Big one coming to Colorado, hold on- - 22/12/06 07:59 AM

Yeah - if someone's being a d1ck before you help 'em then charge 'em laugh

Maybe my choice of words was bad... it's not 'horrible' to do it strictly for the money - it's just that it's a missed opportunity to be generous and really help someone in need. There's a human bonding karmic kind of thing that gets left behind with the "I'll get ya outta there for $50" statement wink
Posted by: Mobycat

Re: Big one coming to Colorado, hold on- - 22/12/06 08:32 AM

The courteous exchange:

Stuck driver: "Thanks for getting me out, let me give you a little cash for your troubles."

Rescuer: "Thanks for offering, but it's no problem. Hopefully if I ever get stuck, someone will be nice enough to pull me out."

My mom ran out of gas one time on the highway. Lucky for her, it was a diesel. A semi pulled over, gave her gas. She offered to pay, he declined with the same response - hopefully if I ever have it happen, someone will help me out.

I never asked for a dime, and all the time spent digging nurses out so they could get to the hospital was on a volunteer basis. The hospital (where my wife is an RN) just gave me the names and addresses, and I went to get them out. I put over 150 miles on my Frontier running around town in 2 days. I made $50 and went through 2 tanks of gas, broke a set of chains (that hit my fender, thank you very much) and was wasted last night from severe headache and plugged sinuses.

I never, ever, asked for money, and wouldn't accept it from any of the nurses that I got. But from a couple of the Dr's, oh hell yeah I did! They didn't even get out and shovel their own walk, but had a service do it. One lived on a major street that had been plowed clean, but didn't want to drive his fancy what-the-fuck-ever in case he got into an accident! Yeah, I took his $5 for gas.

The rest of the folks that pushed, pulled, dug out or yanked out around my neighborhood, never offered. One guy was in a Dodge Magnum Hemi Station Wagon AWD. He offered and wouldn't take no for an answer and looked like he was getting offended. So I took his $5 too. But that was the only one near me that offered. The rest was just karma points.

Damn, missed the blizzard again. 3 maybe 4 inches of snow.

The real bummer is I've got gifts stuck in transit because DIA is closed. At least FedEx used Colorado Springs.

Also a set of rear axle bearings for my truck are stuck out there somewhere.......Praying for parts on Tuesday, since I hope to drive to moab on Wednesday.

Sidewalks are dry, I can see grass in front of the house.

But, I get to drive up to Denver - Sat, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Amazing to be so close to the snow, but miss nearly all of it.

Our Denver customer emails our support department last night indicating that one of their toll lanes has not shown any traffic all day (the person reporting it is covering for our usual technical contact for vacation purposes).

After checking their system and not finding anything amiss, one of our support technicians checks the network camera and finds the problem:

Too funny about that car in that pic! I actually drove right by that car and thought to myself "I could just go through the cutout in the median and strap that guy out, but the bastard abandoned it there."

Nice Technical story. Does Denver have access to that monitor as well?

Kinda like a blonde with a bottle of white out, covering the computer monitor while writing a letter.

Yup, but the person on call that evening probably wasn't aware of how to access it. Their tech guy mounted the camera and rigged it up. He was the one that tipped us off to the IP address of the camera and suggested we check it out.

Had to hurry out and pick up the wife a 4x4 yesterday in time for the new snow. She messed up the front end of her car sliding into curbs - and since then has been driving my X, and I was stuck with the screwed up car.

Lots of Wolverines and Sooners are going to be hitting the sky this weekend to travel west and this could screw a bunch of those guys.

Started at ~noon... 6" on top of the old snow already. The old snow shrunk from 30+ to 8+.

This white crap needs to stay in the mountains.

Had to put the chains back on. 15 minutes to go from Peoria/I70 to Chambers/I70. Will be taking the side roads home again.

Still, I've been watching the plows for several hours now. Looks like they don't want a repeat of the last storm, eh?

SNOW - 4 hours of snow and ice to make it over Monarch
Pass. What is usually 2 hours took four today. I hit snow and ice at about Cotopaxi and it was pretty much solid over the top of Monarch. Drive into Gunnison was fine, then hit more snow packed roads until west of Blue Mesa. Roads were clear through to Moab.

BTW - MOAB, UTAH is where I'll be while you guys enjoy more snow in Colorado. laugh

I'll be hitting the trail in the morning. I have chains for all four wheels if needed, but my hope is a little slickrock for three days.

You guy's get things cleaned up by the first when I am coming through denver - Okay?

Hopefully three days of beautiful wheeling in MOAB.

You all really have to send some of that snow this way. Every year we're seem to be getting less and less snow over here. Sucks.

What does it look like as far as snow amounts and road conditions in the Denver/Boulder area?

I was supposed to be driving back to Boulder via I-70, leaving KC Saturday morning.

However, I wont be able to since I-70 is closed at the west end of Kansas.

What does everyone forsee as far as road conditions in the next day or two? Is this storm worse than the one last week?

It is not worse, but not over yet. Last week we got 30 inches in 24 hours. This week it could be 30 inches in 4 days. Should stop by Saturday morning. If the wind cooperates, I-70 could be open Sunday.

Mill Canyon, Monitor/Merrimac, Seven Mile Rim
Only a little snow on the trail. A section above Uranium Arch gave me trouble. Must fix the ARB compressor tonight.

See you guys later.

Just back from 10 days in Denver, CO. We had a fantastic time love the place snow and all.

We had 3 feet right before we arrived and another foot of snow a couple of days before we left smile

The X did great, about 2600 miles round trip didnt miss a beat although I finally blew a headlight bulb. It was interesting to watch my fuel mileage drop from 17 mpg or so to 12.5 eek once we started uphill through colorado. Thats the first time I've filled up twice in 300 miles....lol.

I've got some great pics will put a few up in the next day or two.

Regards and thank you denver for a white xmas!!

The street looks pretty much the same today.. almost all the cars have been dug out.. but the street is still packed with snow! I still use 4wd to park safely!

I'm ready for round 3 -- I love this stuff! cool
