site is so slow

Why is this site so slow these days. Theres always a long lag for pages to load. It's not me. I'm on cable and every other website loads instantly.

I noticed the slow down right around the same time that those little flashing x-mas lights appeared on the logo up top. But I can't believe those little lights are really sucking that much juice from the site...

It's slow for me too. Definitely started after the seasonal skin...

It's def. slow and you can all blame me since I requested the lights..

It has actually been a bit slow since the big "crash of 07"

I have tried to get the accelerator for UBB.classic to run but the board gets hung up on something.

Any hope of ever getting to something more modern? I know Ian toyed with vbulletin way back when and decided for whatever reasons to not upgrade... but it would be nice.

Any chance its a host issue?

Maybe its a sign of impending machine death.

I don't think it is a soon to be machine death as the headers and other non BBS stuff loads fast.

Okay I'm thinking there's something more insideous going on here. Every time I enter into the forums on this site, my virus software pops up on my screen with a warning. This only started today. I suggest you all scan your PCs immediately. If you're a Mac user... well aren't you just special. :p

Interesting, just got an anti virus pop up as well when I tried to access the 'What the hell' post.
"Nuche_org[1].htm" was grabbed by Norton as a downloader virus.

Sent a note to Dreamhost to see if they can see anything on their end.

Yep I get "Autoprotect has blocked Downloader....your PC is secure...."

A teeth-wielding vagina doesn't make me feel very secure...

As for the speed of the site, I'll get together with Carlton and see if I can remember what causes the accelrator not to work correctly. It happened several years ago.

I don't know if anything was done but the site seems a bit faster now.

I get the top portion of the site right away and everything else stays white while I've aleady browsed 5 different pages on another site in my other window.

It's the database running slowly that causes general slowdown of the entire forum in my experience.

I see we are hosted with Dreamhost, which basically means we are on a shared server where there could be other sites also trying to access the same MySQL server and generally slow us down.

Maybe the site has just grown to big for a shared hosting setup and should be switched to a Virtual Dedicated (Shared with only a few others - rather than tens of folks), or a Dedicated server (All to ourselves). The cost of which however is obviously allot higher than the $6 a month or whatever this site currently costs.

Still really slow, right? Or is it my most recent firewall upgrade from Spysweeper.. No other sites seem to be affected at the moment though, mine included...

Wouldn't being a flat file make it slower?

Can some of the site be archived, lessening the size?

Everytime posts get pruned to make the file smaller those posts still show up in the search results, though. Kinda agravating.

Maybe we should just scrap the site and start over.

Try killing the XMAS lights first.. I dunno', that's when it started slowing for me.

Flat file can be slower than a database, but when it comes down to it, it's still just a CPU looking for shit on a hard drive.

UBB is a very old piece of forum software, but it has always been pretty rock solid.

No fucking idea why it's working better now, I didn't touch it.

It's been running fine for me for the passed week or so..

I just sent Carlton a post in the "Suggestions" section so he could respond to everyone.

Seems the "Parts and Accessories" can be read, but you can't post anything there. Hasn't been any posts there since last Friday (the 4th). Seemed strange to not have any new posts there for that long so I tried to start a new test thread there and it timed out.

Don't know what it is, but SOMETHING is (not) going on there!

On the plus side, the work done to speed up the site worked! The site as a whole is much faster now. Good job Carlton! (Can we vote him king?)
