Painting Wheels..Long Term Results

Painting Wheels..Long Term Results - 30/01/04 08:22 AM

I picked 5 steelies for my X. I am thinking of spray bombing them myself. I know quite a few fellow X owners have done a great job painting them. I was wondering how the paint is holding up long term?
Thanks, Dan

I'm not sure about your question but, I like the switch panel in you photo gallery.

Mine have held up great for 1 month now! laugh
Not even the tiniest bit of paint has flaked off but I sanded the shit out of them and put on 4 coats of paint. They were the stock 15" steel wheels.

i have had mine painted for about 6 months now, just cleaned them really really good and painted them with rustoleum industrial flat black and then covered with semi-gloss clear coat, looks pretty bitchin'. they've held-up really damn well even with road salt and four-wheelin, i am very happy with the results. by the way, i have steel wheels too, it's definitely worth doing, it's a pretty bad-ass looking mod too.

wordtothis,

Nice looking, since you used the semi-gloss clear coat, do they have a shine to them?

they actually have more of a dull-lustre to them to tell the truth. it isn't shiny by any means, but it does look pretty slick.
glad the pics worked.

I was going to get a set of rock crawlers like this

but I've been worrying about backspace and offset, maybe I'll just get a set of steel wheels and paint them too.

You mean like these? I used semi-gloss after a 3 minute sanding job.

Mine are rusted up around the bolt holes after only a few days of driving in salt. They look really good painted black, I think I'll have to do this in the springtime now.

On order now, these should be on DBAX in 2-3 weeks. laugh

edit- To stay on topic they're factory coated with Teflon. No rusty, no sticky. laugh

Those rims are off a Hummer, where did you fine them with Nissan bolt pattern. I thought those were only made for GM SUV's.

Originally I saw them in an offroad adventure magazine, in an ad for AR. I looked on the american racing website. Than I called a local AR distributor. Than I ordered them through 4wheelparts. I'm stoked. laugh
EDIT- The '01 16x7 bolt pattern's a 6 x 5.5

Thanks for all the replies on painting steelies. I guess I will shop for spray bombs soon.
Those AR wheels are sweet!
