Keycodes

Although this is mentioned in the book, I highly recommend that all of you write down the keycode on a piece of paper and keep a copy at your house as well as in your wallet. If you ever lose your keys a dealer or locksmith can cut you a new one right away. All they need is the numbers from that keycode and you will avoid a lot of time and hassles. Just a suggestion.

Or just memorize it

I bought my Rhode Gear Gorilla bike lock back in '91, and without even trying the keycode stamped on the key (barrel style no less) found its way into my permanent memory. 2 or 3 years ago I lost my key, and I couldn't find my spare. I managed to find out that Rhode Gear had been bought by Bell over the years, called them, and got a new pair of keys sent. Sure enough, my memory held up!

It should have been stamped on a little metal tab and given to you with the keys when you bought your X. It makes getting a new one a lot easier. If you were not given this, or lost it, you may want to contact the dealer that it was bought from and see if they can help.

Re: Keycodes - 23/04/01 08:49 PM

I got two remotes and two keyrings ... also, a delaers' ID plate on each key ring, which I tossed immediately ... kept banging against the steering column ...

I'm going to my dealer tomorrow to inquire re the key code and will post back here when I'm done ...

I'll be anxious to hear what the dealers say, since I didn't receive a key code either.

No key code here either. I didn't even get that laminated pice of paper with the truck info on it.

Re: Keycodes - 24/04/01 07:46 AM

Don't worry about it. I've had like a zillion keys made for my X and Frontier and never once did anyone ask for a key code. If you need a spare key just swing by a dealership and have them cut you a few, or ask for some when you stop in for service. I also had one made at a hardware store and they didn't need a keycode either. So I'm not sure what the importance of having it is since nobody needs it to cut you a key.

Re: Keycodes - 24/04/01 08:05 AM

I think you missed the point. The keycode is for if you have lost all copies of your key. Sure you can get a dupe made from a key you have, but if you don't have a key, the code is the only way to have a new key cut.

Re: Keycodes - 24/04/01 12:48 PM

uhhh....my point was....if you don't have a key code, just go and get a bunch of keys made now, therefore if you lose one or two, you'll have plenty of backup copies and won't need a keycode. See?

Re: Keycodes - 24/04/01 02:31 PM

OK, one and all ...

I went to my dealer, saw my salesman and he sent me to the Parts Department ...

Went there, they asked for my VIN and driver's license ...

The Parts guy did a whizbang with his computer and handed me a piece of paper with my key code on it ... he told me to keep it in a safe place, so that WHEN I lose ALL my keys, I can go to any Nissan dealer anywhere and they'll cut me the RIGHT key ...

Sure beats having Triple A come out and have some gorilla take off the steering wheel to cut an ignition key (happened to my Dad on his 4-Runner) ...

Thanks Pepper! Guess that means I'll have to take a trip to the dealer soon. Definately want to have that number before I take any long trips.

Re: Keycodes - 25/04/01 10:42 AM

I have 4 copies of mine. Two from dealer and two from auto store. I don't plan to be without a key. I also got two fobs from the dealership no extra charge.

Re: Keycodes - 25/04/01 01:22 PM

The X "learns" what remote to pay attention to, you can buy a new one and there is a simple procedure to teach the X to use it. Bascially, close doors, lock doors, insert/remove key fully into ignition 6 times in <10 seconds, hazards blink, click remote(s), remove key, done.
