whats the general consensus out there: on the recommemded mileage, for changing the plug wires,cap and rotor

Well, on a new X Nissan recommends that you do a tune-up at 100,000 miles. Mostly due to the platinum tipped plugs.

I myself will probably rip all that stuff out and replace it with normal plugs (NGK or similar) long before then.

I'm not a fan of platinum tipped plugs. They're great for older, fouling engines and weak ignition systems - but rarely give you full power/performance/efficiency.

I would not worry about this untill your X has at least 50K miles on it. I am a maintenance freak and I will not change my cap/rotor/plugs/wires untill 60k miles or so. Oil every 3000 no matter what. Diff fluids every 15000 miles. But thats just me. I will keep my X forever, or at least as long as I live.
