Catback Systems

I am interested in knowing how many of you installed catback systems and how much of the exhaust they actually replaced? I noticed that everyone's idea of a catback system replaces the exhaust from the muffler back. Since on an Xterra that is in no way a catback system and can't possibly be a tuned exhaust since it left the y-pipe and everything intact, I am debating on just replacing my muffler. I don't mind paying for a catback exhaust as long as I get what I pay for. Since the Xterra cats are bolted directly to the exhaust manifolds, a catback would replace everything, including the y-pipe, with a tuned exhaust. Any thoughts?

Have you put them on yet? I am looking at them but will wait until I hit engine phase in project X before I wory about it too much. I am looking at putting a performance package in my truck when I complete the other phases of my project.

I haven't tried 'em yet, but I'm toying with the idea of down the road, adding...

- headers
- wider throttle body
- aftermarket chip
- cat-back exhaust

Also possibly some ignition upgrades like wires and plugs. Kennedyusmc got some wires, I wonder how he ever made out...

No chip for the X if it is like other Nissan trucks, the whole ECM needs to be sent out.

Maybe the chip *inside* can be modified externally?

Add-on or piggy-back boxes are starting to show up in the market. Generally speaking, they allow for some adjustment to the fuel and timing map(s) and may have other tuning features. Better than a pre-programed chip because you can alter the settings as you add performance parts to the engine.
Of course, you really need to know what you are doing and have diagnostic equipment. A trip to a dyno might also be in order.
